I was always career minded. However, being Bipolar has now disrupted my career one too many times. Up until 7 years ago I was climbing the corporate ladder with a packaging company until I had a psychotic episode for the first time. I had to quit work for 6 months and then I scored another job with another company. But the same thing happened again. I had a hypermanic episode and became psychotic again and had to quit work. I have been through the same cycle now 5 times where I find work, get the job, relapse and loose the job. The last job lasted 2 days before relapsing again. I guess a sales career was too much pressure. What I want to know is what opportunities are out there for people like me (us) where it seems stress is a trigger. I get so depressed about my illness and the thought of going through this again is scarey. Is there other employment options that are out there that doesn't require any experience and is rewarding? I have been unemployed now for over 7 months since the last episode but it has really been 18 months since I was full time employed.
What can I do? What is there to do? Posted on 06/16/08, 02:06 am |

It took a little over 7 years for them to get my meds right so yes that's what I'm suggesting. If you're are getting mania and psychotic then it sounds like your meds aren't right. If your meds aren't right then it follows that your pdoc needs to adjust them to make it right.

7 years is a very long time, so i can see why you're worried! But hold on and try to hope.
I'm thinking about my carreer. I don't know what i'll be able to do. I had a lot of ideas I once thought I would do but now I know it's not possible. *sigh*

are you on medications? if not, you should be -- they make all of the difference. due to my medications, i am holding down a well paying proffesional job. it all has to do with finding the right medication combo, the right psychiatrist, and a good psychologist. in time, things will change for you. best of luck!!! matthew.

If you do work, try to find a job that you can do and still manage your bp. Don't try to pursue a job that causes to much emotional or mental strain, that will wear you out quickly!
