Career Crisis

I was always career minded. However, being Bipolar has now disrupted my career one too many times. Up until 7 years ago I was climbing the corporate ladder with a packaging company until I had a psychotic episode for the first time. I had to quit work for 6 months and then I scored another job with another company. But the same thing happened again. I had a hypermanic episode and became psychotic again and had to quit work. I have been through the same cycle now 5 times where I find work, get the job, relapse and loose the job. The last job lasted 2 days before relapsing again. I guess a sales career was too much pressure. What I want to know is what opportunities are out there for people like me (us) where it seems stress is a trigger. I get so depressed about my illness and the thought of going through this again is scarey. Is there other employment options that are out there that doesn't require any experience and is rewarding? I have been unemployed now for over 7 months since the last episode but it has really been 18 months since I was full time employed.

What can I do? What is there to do?

" Are you recently diagnosed and put on meds? The meds will take a while to get used to. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right med cocktail. When you do your life will improve greatly.
I've been working all my life and I've been bipolar all my life. It is possible to have a full life. Don't give up and keep pushing. "

" I've been on a cocktail of meds for 7 years, nothing has seemed to hold me. I was put on Clopixel (antipsychotic) at the beginning of the year through a depot injection and that is all I'm taking. It has giving me a diffderent reality and I am battling the dpression side of things since getting the injection...there hasn't been any manic symptoms at all (unfortunately) "

" I don't get manic either. I'm BP2. I know it's hard but you've got to keep trying. You can't let this lousy illness get the best of you. Make sure you tell your pdoc EVERYTHING about how you feel and how the meds make you feel. "

" To be honest I think this illness is already winning and I'm not usually a defeatest. I've even joined this website recently...how is the illnesss not winning...its been 7 years since my diagnosis and I can see how it was effecting my life before hand. I just got out of hospital recently for depression so forgive me if I'm not being optimistic. "

" If you're depressed you can't be optimistic. Just remember that you're in a depression and everything is going to look bleak. But this will change, you have to take it one step at a time. I'm glad you joined us, there are a lot of people here who understand and give good advice.
I'm off to bed now, so hopefully we can chat tomorrow. Don't overthink stuff for now, we beepers have a tendency to do that.
Sleep well. "

" It take years sometimes to find a combination of meds that work for you. Many times just one med isn't enough. Sometimes you need to take this BP thing by the balls to get stable and beat it. That may mean talking to your pdoc about what's going on and if that doesn't bring about changes finding a new one. Don't give up. "

" I feel like I have taken this illness by the balls by remaining sane. I know its the hypermania that makes me psychotic and the medication I am on has given me a new sense of reality, except the reality isn't that great). Are you really suggesting that seven years isn't enough time to get the meds right? "
