Just a short question
Does anyone else find hypergraphia an asset and beneficial in releasing the tension of mania and does it bring you up out of a depression Just trying to sort out my moods and trying to find coping stratigies here to help me in controlling the moodswings Wrtiting is a passion anyway so I guess anything that comes from it is beneficial but do you think it can contribute to the mania in anyway or am I off base here Posted on 08/10/12, 03:05 pm |

Amateur etymoligist that I am, I took the time to look it up. Thank you. My word of the day.
I am not going to invest in an official diagnosis, but my 20,000 page journal, file drawer crammed with miscellania and several other sets of etceteras tempt me to declare myself hypergraphic. Unofficially, of course.

I looked it up too. Wikipedia actually says it is associated with mania in Bipolar..... I would say it is definitely one of my symptoms.

i have this, but usually as an accompaniment to hypomania, not as a precursor to it. although i will say that one poem can raise me out of my depression - still, i do not burn unless elevated.

I think it reduces strain on my relationships. Every word I hyper express on paper is a word I don't have to vent verbally. Working it out with myself in writing helps keep me from ranting aimlessly. Sorta. Better than nothing.

i think that is one of the things pushing me to write - there are things that cannot be said in passing or in conversation or discussion - things that beg for some crafting, things that ask to be shaped. these things hit me most often when hypo.
and i'm most likely in that state to believe they are genius & need to be heard & preserved, natch....

Hypergraphia is a symptom of mania. For me it comes out in journals and in drawings. When I go back and read it, it pretty much barely makes sense and the flight of ideas makes me laugh later.

It's kind of a irresistible compulsion, isn't it? Doesn't make mania worse ..it's a component of the mania.

Love all of the answers and totally agree that it does help with the expressions of thoughts that fly during mania Now I can control it a little better and turn out amazing articles although I usually have to go back and clean them up a little grammar etc spelling but I find it extremely effective for releasing the excess energy and thoughts Thanks everyone for your replies Helped tremendously

sorry for dredging up a slightly old post - but this is a kickass topic. I have never seen anyone mention this; thank you.
As a wannabe writer, I have tons and tons of notebooks; some good ideas, and some truly manic blather where I have no idea what I was thinking. Looking at them at a later date, while trying to sort out useful notes, was like looking into a broken mirror. It was a little crushing to see a lot of stuff that was straight-up incohernent BS that I once thought was "art". *Le Sigh*
