How To Deal with Mental Illness and College/Jobs?!

I've been having the worst time dealing with anxiety/bipolar/depression and going to school. I went and lived on campus my first semester but ended up coming home, took a couple semesters off and never got out of bed basically. Now I'm doing really well taking classes online through my community college and I've been doing well with it for multiple semesters. I was supposed to transfer and commute to a college nearby in January, but I just had a blip with my mood/meds and am now doing another semester online and deferring til September for the other college.
How do any of you make plans or be dependable for jobs and school?? I can't afford to have a breakdown during the semester, miss classes, and have it be worth nothing. I don't know how to have a job because there will be days where I won't be able to go in. I just don't know how to deal with bipolar and life yet. Posted on 11/06/09, 09:11 am |

Can you not continue with the online classes longer? Why the need to go to actual class? I am taking online courses through Ashford University. The whole four years will be online. It is a real college too, not just an online one. I have tried so many times to go the real life route only to fail miserably and never finish because of my anxiety. My only advice is to wait until you are ready to go real live class route. If you do it too soon, well, it would just be better for you to wait. In the mean time you can try to work on your anxiety. Good luck!

I returned to college this semester and attend classes. It has been difficult and challenging getting my to class. I literally have to "make myself" go and my son gives me a bit of a push out the door. He reminds me that I want a better life for myself - so he is helpful. I do, however, get very anxious once I pull into the parking lot and find it hard to get myself into the building at times. So, I began to give myself extra time before class starts to get over it (anxiety). So, I arrive to class 15 minutes early just to get myself in a "good spot" mentally that is. It hasn't been easy and I have decided to take online classes next semester as much as possible. I was able to get 2 online classes. Work - that one has always been hard for me. It's been the hardest part of my life. I recently qualified for assistance through Vocational Rehab. They are going to help me find the type of job I can do based on my mental health issues. They will retrain me for a new field of work. They said it will be likely one where the stress is low and I won't have to deal with a lot of people. So, we'll see how that works out. Oh, from what I understand, the colleges offer assistance to such people as us - more time for test taking, extra help with course work, etc. Check it out, maybe they can assist you with any difficulties that arise if you do attend an class. Also, check out Voc. Rehab if they can help me, I'm sure they can help you. Best wishes and good luck. Sorry for the long reply to your post.
