Cyclothymia help!!!!!!!!!

After going through therapists for years, I have yet to get a helpful diagnosis.

Out of my own research I have discovered I most likely fit 'cyclothymia'. I do not fit the traditional bipolar categories, but I have mood swings that are what I consider 'crazy'. To boot, I have PTSD from childhood trauma.

I know I need to find a Pdoc eventually (I'm distrustful because many therapists have been unhelpful in suggesting correct diagnosis - looking back I see some of them didnt want to lose my 'business')but I'm wondering if anyone with this disorder can help me.

Specifically I'm wondering if anyone on here is able to manage their episodes without meds?

I exhibit both the highs and lows with nothing too extreme either way - just enough to make life miserable for myself and those around me. I experience mixed episodes under stress frequently. As long as I'm not too stressed out, I'm okay, when I am - all bets are off !

Hypomanic symptoms never last more than a few days typically, whilst the depressive seems to last longer. Although, when I am stressed I just don't behave with any kind of predictability - hence the 'mixed" part.

Was wondering if anyone could suggest anything helpful - like medication that's worked for them(which of course would have to go through a Pdoc) or the possibility of lifestyle management. I'm wondering if I can get through this. I just need encouragement to know that I can still function and perhaps accomplish something in life.

I'm so bent out of shape right now....thanks...

" hi, well cyclothemia is managed in the same way as bipolar

mmod stabilizer, e.g lithium
good sleep routine
no booze or drugs

but you need a proper diagnosis of course there are at leat 16 other things that look like bipolar.

you might find this useful. If you do, say thanks in that thread

" Seeing a Phyciatrist ,is very different than seeing a Phycologist..The Pdoc(Phyciatrist),will take a through history of your mood patterns ,and be able to correctly diagnose (DX) you..maybe you'll need a mildler BP med, maybe just some copeing techniques.

In any regard,I'd suggest a professional DX from a qualified Pdoc.

Good Luck "

" Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

I read your article acfish, and alot of it rings true for me. I've been down this road a couple of times but turned back because I didnt want to deal with it. However, my grandfather had it and there is a history of it in my family.

The hard part now is getting a proper diagnosis. I hope I can find a decent doc. "
