im on lamictal 200 mg and i feel like i am getting dumber every year when i was tested i had a slightly below genius iq and now i can barely function in my college classes i feel like i cant understand basic things that i would have understood very quickly before. what moodstabilizers could i take instead that wouldnt make me stupid or anything i could take with the lamictal to decrease this side effect?! anything you know please help

I was on Abilify for several years until I had to go off due to cost. It worked great and I didn't have that "stupid" feeling. I honestly don't know if it is considered a mood stabilizer or not. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck to you!

I am on Lamictal 225 mg daily and I am also feeling really stupid. I comment on it all of the time to my husband and PDOC. Unfortunately, that is one of the side effects (as well as increased hunger and subsequent weight gain). I can't seem to be able to express myself very well and have a real delay in remembering things when speaking (really noticeable).
Like you, I also tested in the "genius" range and now I struggle with simple concepts. Can't work anymore. Also, have difficulty reading complex material and having motivation. Haven't tried Abilify, but you (and I) should ask our Docs about it. Good luck.

My doc is experimenting with topimax (new for bipolar) same dumber by the day so stay away!!

Tree, are there any down sides to the Lithium ER?
I used to be on Lamictal. I didn't realize it until now, but I definately felt not as sharp. I've been off now for over 8 months. I need to get something to stabilize my moods. I'm going to see my good pdoc for the first time in over a year and a half. I hope he can straighten out some of my meds. T

I don't know about you guys, but for me being more 'stupid' is part of being more 'normal'.
Seriously, all my life I felt like a weirdo, who will l get easily isolated just for being smarter. After struggle of my life trying to hide my real skills, lamictal had finally helped me. Yeap, sounds weird, even for me, but that's how I feel.
