I was b on abilify for the past 3 months and felt better then I ever have before! I was on the sample packets while I tried to figure out how I was going to pay for it, turns out my private insurance wont cover it and I can't find anyone else who will :( So my doc switched me to 1mg of Risperdal... and after having been on it for about a week and half now I can truly say my bipolar symptoms have come back ten fold. I actually forgot what it felt like to be "bipolar" and forgot about my symptoms now I remember, and I absolutely hate this feeling. My mom had to call the emergency number last night because I kept crying, I didn't know why, and I couldn't stop. I felt awful about my life and felt like a disgusting person. My doctor over the phone told me to up my dosage by 1/2. I'm worried that's not going to do anything and i'm really affraid of having another crying episode. Has anyone had any problems switching meds before? Is it normal to have symptoms until you're "used" to your new med or is this new med just not working at all. Any thoughts on Risperdal working/ not working for you?

changing medication can be a nightmare. sometimes they work, and work great, and sometimes they produce all sorts of *wacky* side effects. i am usually not a fan.
it is definitely normal to have symptoms/side effects until your body stabilizes on a medication. it is also quite possible that it's not the right one, or that you may need a combination of several to stabilize. I took risperdal for about 4-6 years, in combination with depakote and wellbutrin. it was a decent antipsychotic, but i had an embarassing hand tremor that just got worse and worse as time went on. finally i went off of it and went onto abilify, (and lexapro). Abilify works better for me.

I REALLY want to go back on abilify, it makes me sad just thinking about it that I probably can't, because i have no way to pay for it. It's about $500 a month :-/

i started lithium last month and all my symptoms came back in the form of mixed and rapid cycles. its was HORRIBLE! i dealt with it for a whole month and finally called my pdoc, he's perscribed me abilify which i've heard nothing but good things. i have really crappy insurance so i have to pay for it out of my pocket but if it works i suppose its worth it?

Risperdal caused me to drool and I was unable to show that I comprehended anything in front of me. I was on it while in a hospital. It didn't last long.
I was on abilify for about two weeks, and I turned out to be within the rare 1% that has horrible weight gain. By the first week, I was stuck in pjs because I could no longer wear any of my clothes. After I got off it, my weight went back down. Some meds do take longer to adjust from and to, like said above. Some will have side effects at first that go away (adjusting), and some have side effects that will just always be there. Takes a while to figure out the right med or combination of them. Ahh, the joys of playing guinnie pig.

I've been through many medication changes - completely different meds and also different dosages. It is definitely normal to have various symptoms until your body gets used to it, but if it's unbearable I always figure there has to be a better way. I absolutely hate this process, so much luck to you.
