Do I really have it?

I'm not really sure where to begin...I had a major breakdown at the end of last year. I was extremely depressed and I attempted to take my life in January. I lived obviously. Hospitalized for a couple weeks. Treated for depression. I want off the meds. Now my dr says I am Bipolar II and need to switch meds. I'm very frustrated by this because the major causes of my depression are gone and I don't think that just because I experience good, productive times in my life in between bouts of depression make me Bipolar! Why does it have to be that! It makes me depressed just thinking about it! My family doesn't think I'm sick. I've been reading so many other experiences and mine don't seem as extreme... So Do I really have it????

" Being older, I was thrilled to finally get a real dx.....for people my age (57) it took 20 yrs. or more to get it right. I was so thankful, finally will get the help I need.
With bipolar 2, your "up" and "productive periods" are likely hypomania (very mild form of mania). If you get the euphoric kind, you would naturally think nothing was wrong.
But as you mentioned you are doing the "up and down" thing. Mood stabilizers will keep you on an even keel. Anti-depressants can help too, but you MUST be on a mood stabilizer to counter act the hypomania they can cause.
Wishing you all the best, Bobbi "

" thank you so much for all your input. little by little, i feel myself coming around. but it is comforting to know that i'm not the only one who has struggled with the dx.

So thank you very much for sharing!
