Do I really have it?

I'm not really sure where to begin...I had a major breakdown at the end of last year. I was extremely depressed and I attempted to take my life in January. I lived obviously. Hospitalized for a couple weeks. Treated for depression. I want off the meds. Now my dr says I am Bipolar II and need to switch meds. I'm very frustrated by this because the major causes of my depression are gone and I don't think that just because I experience good, productive times in my life in between bouts of depression make me Bipolar! Why does it have to be that! It makes me depressed just thinking about it! My family doesn't think I'm sick. I've been reading so many other experiences and mine don't seem as extreme... So Do I really have it????

" well they don't give bipolars mood stabilizers for nothing.

Imagine what life would be without those lows. My belief that being happy and productive is normal mood state. The stabilizer stops it going further to the kind of thing I don't want, ie becoming massively over confident/irritable at work, on the road etc. "

" I can't answer for you whether or not you're bipolar or whether or not the doctors are right. What I do recognize is your depression. What medications do they want to put you on? I noticed from your profile that you're currently taking Effexor and have just started Lamictal. We're these both for depression? I guess what I want to say is that while doctors have studied and trained and are so-called experts in the field of diagnosis, we live in our bodies and have got to give them input and feedback in order to reach a diagnosis and treatment plan that will work for us. Good luck to you and don't go driving over any high bridges! "

" Effexor for depression (pdoc says its for unipolar depression, but it was Rx'd while I was in the hospital)

Lamictal for bp.

He doesn't want to take me off the effexor yet because I still have some depression. "

" Don't worry so much about a diagnosis. Those are mainly for insurance purposes anyway. Just concentrate on getting better. A change of meds could be a great thing for you. Just think how different things will be if adding something additional to your medications brings you up? "

" Part of the reason they may be giving the diagnosis of BP is the rhythm of your cycles. If a major depression follows a period that you call "normal" or "productive", then they may see a pattern. What goes up (productive) must come down (depression) is the pattern for BP.

I would talk openly with your pdoc about his diagnosis and ask him why he thinks you have BP. The most difficult part is "acceptance". Once you accept you can research and understand so you can live your best life with it and be your best self. Hugs "

" I didnt want to believe I had it either. I have bp II and borderline personality disorder.
Im on a stabilizer and I asked my therapist, Are you sure I was diagnosed properly...he said...how were you before the meds?

and it made me think. "

" accepting it is damned hard. but you have to know this. stay on meds, off meds equals a disaster waiting to happen. its just chemicals in the brain. need meds to make chems. if you don't make chems for your brain you will go further and further off till you do something stupid.

welcome to the club :D i relate to you a lot. "
