I'm not really sure where to begin...I had a major breakdown at the end of last year. I was extremely depressed and I attempted to take my life in January. I lived obviously. Hospitalized for a couple weeks. Treated for depression. I want off the meds. Now my dr says I am Bipolar II and need to switch meds. I'm very frustrated by this because the major causes of my depression are gone and I don't think that just because I experience good, productive times in my life in between bouts of depression make me Bipolar! Why does it have to be that! It makes me depressed just thinking about it! My family doesn't think I'm sick. I've been reading so many other experiences and mine don't seem as extreme... So Do I really have it????

Can't tell.
Remember bipolar can be triggered by environmental factors. You have clear evidence of depression, what was the evidence the doctor identified to suggest bipolar rather than the more usual unipolar depression?

Well I do not know whether you are bipolar or not. I think you have try to understand what bipolar is from internet & books. There is no definite test for bipolar. Doctors differ in diagnosis.Go for a second opinion.

That was the second opinion.
Evidence: some bouts of insomnia, periods of depression, otherwise very active, productive life. Childhood trauma, adulthood trauma by battering husband, two immediate family members who are not quite right emotionally but not diagnosed.

So you have had 2 diagnosis of bipolar and you are resisting?
Seeing as you have actually had untreated bipolar so you know what it feels like..what is it about that diagnosis that makes you feel bad? You will now have the opportunity for proper treatment to reduce your problems.

Yes 8 hours difference.
If it is Bipolar then you can better treatment for the depression. For many of us conventional anti-depressents don't work, but some of the mood stabilizers are wonderful for depression, e.g lamictal. End of the day, it's up to you.

My family and most of my friends think do not agree with the diagnosis. I prefer to believe that childhood abuse made me depressed in my teens, leading to my way failed suicide attempt. And that my loser husband's physical, emotional and psychological abuse led to the other bouts of depression, culminating in the attempt I made in January. And I was oh so close. He called while the pills were taking affect, but I was so mad at him for ignoring my plea to get help with his anger issues that I didn't pick up the phone. So he came home early. I fought as hard as I could but he got me in the car and rushed me to the hospital. Now he congratulates himself on saving my life. But he has already killed me on the inside. Don't have a life now. I just feel dead. And now, I'm a burden to my family and friends because I can't take care of myself. I looked for a tall enough bridge to drive off of tonight, but I couldn't find one.
I felt so great this morning. But this diagnosis really has me down.
