1. No matter what happens in us in life, we are given the chance to choose.

2. Thou shall not compare yourself to other people. Respect your own strength and capabilities. You are meant to be that way.

3. There is no more beautiful and good word than PEACE. With BP, you may not be happy right now but there is Peace between happiness and unhappiness.

4. Being a BP doesnt mean that you are weak. Remember to respect yourself always. You made no fault. And being neutral can help.

5. Forgive yourself. You must have this UNLIMITED ability to forgive yourself. Ourselves.Don't measure or live up to unrealistic, ego based standard, do what you think can be good to you.

6. Medicines are a must.

7. It is okay to regress for awhile, allowing ourselves to recuperate for our body , mind and emotions. There are just some days when you are not "functional". It is ok to be a wreck but do try your best not to stay in that status forever.

8. THOU SHALL NOT COMMIT SUICIDE. Life is beautiful. YOu and me were meant to live. Some people think suicide is okay but to me , no. We may not find the answers to our problems but you may not know what tomorrow brings!

9 Promote my health. When we speak of health , think as a whole. Excercise, proper eating and doing what you think makes you happy such having a nice hobby such as painting or dancing or just hanging out with your friends.

10. ACCEPTANCE. Accept that we have this illness. But BIPOLAR IS NOT A SENTENCE. it is not a conclusion. It is a word. And yes, you may undergo cycles, but you're not giving up, and even if we have this, i believe that we can still life our lives to the fullest!

" Those were excellent - but don't sell yourself short - it is possible to get off the meds - after 40 years I have done it and feel great, and am accomplishing lots, lots of friends. Meds can be necessary, but learn about yourself, and someday, as a goal when you are ready - you can be med free. Sometimes you may even have to go back on for a while, but there is a process to find freedom from meds, and their side effects.

Oh, oh, this is really contrary to normal treatment. I don't want anyone going off their meds cause I said so. It took me 15 years to get to this point - gradual, with a lot of help from my daughter who is now a psych aide, and a fantastic pdoc. I cut down in stages, and if I was falling, I jumped back on. I have been med free for over 3 years now. "

" This is wonderful!

I love your piece about acceptance. Personally, I have to remind myself that I am not Bipolar, but I am "a person with Bipolar Disorder." I am not my disease, and my disease is not me.

Nice job, Sampaguita! "
