I was wondering if anyone had any info on the relation of being overweight and bed wetting? When I was younger, a doctor put me on a diet (I've always been overweight) because she thought it was the reason for me wetting the bed. It didn't work. I lost weight, but it didn't help me any in that area.

Has anyone else come across this or had some experience with it? I'm still big, so could it still be a cause?

" From what I've read, the answer is yes... and no. I've seen some sources that say it is possible that being *extremely* overweight can be a contributing factor to bedwetting... in some cases. The idea is that the extra weight compresses the bladder, causing it to have a lowered capacity and greater urgency... in some people. That could potentially lead to wetting... IF the bladder is already small/weak enough that the added pressure from the extra weight is just enough to push it "over the edge", as it were.

You get the idea, I think. Obviously, NOT all highly obese people wet the bed (and, the further from heavily obese you are, the less chance that your weight would be a primary cause)... but if your body is otherwise prone to it, then yes, it's possible that extra weight could make it worse, or make it last longer after you had otherwise grown out of it. I don't think this would apply to being slightly overweight, like 5-10% over your "ideal" body weight -- I think it would only apply if you were substantially over. If that's your situation, and you are able to drop some weight, it would probably have benefits for your health that would be worth the effort regardless of whether it helped you stop wetting or not. If you did happen to stop wetting, you could just think of it as a pleasant "side effect" -- although there's really no way of knowing whether it will have that effect for you or not until you try. (Obviously, as Patty mentioned, it's also very possible to be at an ideal or under weight and still wet the bed due to a small or weak bladder, as many of us do!)

Btw, I don't mean by saying any of this to be putting pressure on you to try to lose weight -- you are who you are, and only you know if such an attempt (which I am sure you have made many different times throughout your life) is worth the effort for you or not at this stage. If you do decide to try losing weight though, I'm sure you will find a lot of support here. Hope this helps and hope you're having a great day!

Hm. Well, when I was young, I was still big, but not SUPER big, and I was still wetting.

But, you're right, Adam, it really wouldn't hurt either way. If it works then 'YAY!' if not then i'm still here minus 'x' pounds. lol
