I had earlier asked if people knew about biacuplasty and it is not a widely known procedure, and I did receive one very kind response but it seems that a lot more people know about fusion. It is my other alternative left beyond biacuplasty. I'd be interested in hearing more -- my problem is in L5-S1. Thank you!

I used an ortho/ back spine specialist. My problem was due to an accident. at work. L-4 L-5 fusion with titanium implant. This was on March 16, 2009. I laid in bed for 3 months unable to walk and in mortal pain. Since the fusion, I am slowly coming around. Still having problems in the sciatica nerve area. My stamina is really low. But I try to focus on what I can do rather than what I can't do. Good luck on your decision.

debbie, it was hard to read about your suffering, I am so sorry for all that you have been through. To tell the truth, I am scared out of my mind with not knowing what to do. I feel very desperate to do something because every day I take awful drugs, can't work and have pain episodes that are soemtimes very hard to take. I decided I will go to Johns Hopkins, they are close to me and have a great reputation. Another set of opinions won't hurt me, but what I will never understand is why the human back is such a mystery for the medical field. It sounds like you were a victim of malpractice, was there nothing you could do when they mistakenly cut your nerve? My heart really goes out to you. M

I went to a highly reputable neurosurgeon at a practice that people from all over the world come to to get the best treatment available, but still the surgery was not successful.

It's been great to hear about everyone's experiences. I am looking at the possibility of having a fusion of L-4 L-5. I am currently doing research after exhausting other options. My dad had a fusion last year in 2 levels in the lumbar spine- he is a fitness instructor (taekwondo, kickboxing etc.) in his mid 50s. He had a great recovery, he was back to teaching his classes after a few weeks (even though he wasn't able to demonstrate all of the excersizes). He has some pain but he doesn't have to take meds other than ibiprofen occasionally. He will tell you that there are some excersizes that he can't do- but overall it really helped him.
