Hydrocodone vs. Oxycodone...

I'm anxious to hear from others that have tried each of these compounds for pain and as to the differences observed by other people.
I, for one, don't understand how oxy has been so widely used and abused as it is not all that effective for me in the form I have been prescribed ( Endocet ).

" I am currently taking Oxycontin 40mg 3 times a day and it is wonderful for my chronic pain. I ave been on it for 2 months now. A week and a half ago my pain doctor increased my Lyrica to 75mg twice a day and I now am getting wonderful pain relief. "

" Endocet is an oxycodone/Acetaminophen compound, and not a very strong medication at all. So I am not surprise that you are not getting enough pain control with it. Oxycontin is straight Oxycodone without any of the Tylenol in it, and it is a better medication for pain. Maybe is time to talk to your pain management Doctor about the little pain relief that you are getting from the Endocet.
Take care, "

" I am currently taking 80mg & 20mg oxycontin 2xday and 2-5mg oxyIR's 4xday and it works wonders for me. i have been on them for almost 2 years.....lower doses in the begining. i tried everything hydrocodone, Fentanyl patches, methadone, MS contin and the only thing that worked were the oxy;s i have DDD and protruding discs at L4 & L5..and my tailbone is straight which i've been told throws off my whole spine curvature. i would personally recommend the oxys to anyone who already has a good track record with being able to control their med intake...as dr. seem leery of prescibing them because of all the bad publicity. good luck "

" Oxycodone is a very small dose of oxy and Acetaminphen. I take "endocet" as well have been for 3.5 yrs now. My dose is 5mg it takes the edge off of my pain. I"m actually surprised it still works after taking it this long. I work in an addiction/mental health agency, I'll just say that "Oxy" is quite a bit different due to the higher doses it is dispursed in.

After all the "addict" and things that people will do for the oxy I don't think I would even want to try it. As it stands now I"m always aware of how much medication I have and when bringing it home from the pharmacy always aware of who's around me, I don't know about anyone else but it's a huge problem in our area. I honestly don't know how you can function and do a daily routine on oxycontin. I need my head to be clear and hate the feeling of not having a clear mind. It just wouldn't be the pain meds I'd choose. Very addicting and even harder to come off of. You can't just "stop" you have to be tapered off other wise your body will go thru terrible withdrawls. "

" any narcotic you take for an extended time you will need to be taper off of. My head is clear. The oxycontin doesn't fog up my mind. Even with the meds i'm on i am still in a lot of pain daily. the pharmacy i go to had a person who was selling peoples names and addresses who take oxycontin...it's a problem everywhere, but for people who are responsible it can be a life saver. It's not to say it's for everyone. Everyone reacts to meds in different ways. "

" I was taking hyrdrocodone. It is bad for the liver and my doctor took me off it as my pain increased and put me on oxycontin. The oxycontin removes about 80% of my pain, so I consider it effective. The hydrocodone was also effective, but long term use can put you into liver failure, according to my doctor. My doctor is a pretty sharp guy and I came to him from another doctor who had prescribed hydrocodone and when my new doctor saw how much I was taking, he took me off it right away. I also take lyrica and valium. Good luck to you. "

" Hydrocodone - My dr. has me on 6 per day and it does not touch the pain. I just took a Soma and it is helping a little but making me sleepy. Is Oxycontin and Lyrica a good combination and still function ok. What is Lyrica? i go back to dr. on Nov 24 and he has got to change me. Is Oxycontin strong? Can anyone tell me what i should suggest to him?
thanks
brenda "

" Hydrocodone, I believe, is similar is structure to codeine and hydromorphone but six times stronger as an analgesic. A study shows it ranges in strength from 1.5x that of morphine to about the same as morphine. Davis, Mellar P. (2005). "Hydrocodone". Opioids for cancer pain. Oxford UK: Oxford University Press. pp. 59–68. Usually, it is combined with paracetamol (Tylenol) which, as mentioned, can be extremely damaging to the liver with long term use. I am not sure if there are formulations of just pure hydrocodone. Oxycodone, on the otherhand, is more similar to oxymorphone. As with hydrocodone, oxycodone can be prescribed with paracetamol, for example, Percocet. Oxycontin is just pure oxycodone released over time. Roxicodone or OxyIr is instant release, pure oxycodone. There are generics of all of these drugs I believe. Oxycodone being the strongest with equipotent strengths of morphine and up to 1.5x morphine's analgesic effect. I remember the FDA wanted to ban use of any Tylenol-opiate compounds because of Tylenol's hepatotoxicity. That would have meant bye bye to many drugs like Percocet and Vicodin. It is curious that the FDA would only have banned the substances with opiates INSTEAD of banning Tylenol. As for Endocet, I am assuming that the strength is too low as Endo only makes up to 10mg oxycodone/apap combo. You may consider switching to a higher dose, oxycodone only product. Also, there are a number of opiate potentiators including TCAs and antihistamines just as a few examples. One could therefore either reduce opiate intake or make a low dose more effective. Hope this info helps someone. "
