Dealing with pain - how to cope?

I have been working overtime for the last 3 weeks which means sitting for up to 10 hours straight (with 2 15 minute breaks and a half hour lunch). No one is forcing me to do it, but I was laid off my job a year ago and had to take this one which pays a lot less money and I need all the money I can earn to cover my bills, especially until I can sell my house.
I can't take pain pills at work because then my head gets jumbled and slowed down. Last night I came home, sat down in a comfortable chair for about 5 minutes, then tried to get up to go get some pain meds and something to eat. I could barely get out of the chair because my back, legs, hips, and feet (why do my FEET hurt when I sit all day????) hurt so badly. Once I got up, all I could do was cry. I just stood there and sobbed for about 5 minutes. Finally I got a grip, got some meds, ate some dinner and went to bed. Cried myself to sleep. How do you deal when you're alone and in pain and just feel like you can't take one more step? And yes - I know I shouldn't work that long, but I have to do what I have to do. It will only last for a couple more weeks - has to do with flu season and H1N1 - panicked people. Posted on 10/10/09, 12:10 pm |

Coping with chronic pain is just hard. I can imagine dealing with it alone makes it even harder. Pain not only wears on you physically, but mentally. I have chronic pain and I try to cope with it by first accepting it. It's a part of my life now and there's nothing I can do about that. I am still mobile and can work full-time, so realizing it could be much worse helps also. On a day to day basis I just try not to think about the pain and just do what I have to do. A lot of times when I feel I can't go any futher it turns into a case of just willing myself to go on. It's very hard to find happiness when you're in constant pain, so you have to look for it in the smallest things.
There are pain relievers out there that won't make you foggy or slow you down. I see a pain management doctor and she has prescribed me Opana Oral and Opan Oral ER since I am a computer programmer and have to concentrate and think all day. I have been taking it since April and it has worked great as far as not clouding my mind. I'm not sure if this helps, but I hope it does. Don't let your pain get best you. Hang in there!

I have been living with chronic pain as I think almost everyone knows on this sight. My advice to you is this, do not be so hard on yourself, and you can cry, a good cry has never hurt anyone. I know you hurt horribly, this may sound weird, but try to make friends with your pain, cause it is your pain! No one is ever going to understand it but you. I have this little thing I say to myself every day, it might help, Life is like a bowl of cherries, sooner than later they will get squished! And no I am not on any meds people! I just think we who suffer from chronic pain of whatever kind are misunderstood, overdrugged and not listened to or taken seriously by our Drs. and most importantly our loved ones in our life who transfer our pain on to them as we become their burden. We need to start having more awareness in this country, so we do not have to suck it up and be alone in our pain. I truly ache for you. Please do everything for you to take care of you first, then whomever you choose to care about do so. But remember you are # 1. Hugs, You can always write me , you know that,

Once I quit fighting it and accepted my life as it is, I set my sights on controling the pain. Oxycontin and oxycodone do very well for me nut I still have those days where you feel like you could fall apart. I say baby yourself when you can, and when you can't try your best if you can to focus on something to get your mind off of it. Pain is miserable but I believe at some point most just learn to live with it.
