I had back surgery 3/16/09. Started pt one month after surgery. I do what I am told and now I have added the pool to my therepy. My pool, the pt told me what to do. Oh, my surgery consisted of L-4, L-5 fusion with a titanium implant, cyst taken off spine that was pressing on my sciatica (physcotic nerve)nerve. My sciatica is still not 100% and when I finish my pool therepy, I can hardly walk. I am not doing any hard swimming. Easy walking and moving my arms. My back is sore from the regular therepy, also. I see my dr on the 10th and if he releases me to go back to work, I will be in trouble. I cannot sit for longer than 10 mins. Even at church I have to get up and stand. Any advice or guidance?

Hi Hun,
Aqua therapy is harder in the body due to the weightlessness of our bodies in the water. I did aqua therapy after my first fusion (360/L2 thru L5 fusion) and it used to kick my butt! You need to let the therapist know so she will take it easier on you. No pain, no gain, does not apply to after surgery PT. As far as your Doctor and returning to work goes...... you need to tell your Doctor the truth. You need to tell him where you are at in your recovery. If you are in a lot of pain, tell him! Tell him about your limitations with sitting down, walking, standing, etc. In my case and I hope that is not the same with you, I was never able to return to work because I kept on getting worse, and now 2 years later and 4 spinal surgeries total, I am on social security disability. Be honest with your Doc, he can not make you go back to work and if you are still in a lot of pain, ask him to refer you to a pain management Doctor. I hope that this helps. Good luck with your appointment.

I cannot imagine being in this wheel chair forever! I am going to fight this with all my might and just like you are.....I will have to suffer through the therapies...IT'S OUR ONLY HOPE! Hugs hun! I wish I could say it was gonna be easy....even though I am just getting started in all this...I already feel ya pain!

Hi, I stopped by on your profile and left a hug!!! I had my second spinal fusion Oct 21 08. I'm still not well. I had one fusion removed and had to have another one done. He also had to do some hip surgery. I would stick to the therphy. If the pool is too hard - try regular therphy with a therphist. I know it hurts!!!!! Still doing it myself. Now I'm able to do it at home. I can feel the hardware in my back and it hurt 24/7. I'll have to have another surgery to have my hardware removed again. But I have to wait it out until my back fuses and my heart gets stronger.
As for you going back to work I would have a good talk with your surgeon. I had to quit my job. I can't sit long either. I'm with you. If you ever need to talk or just vent, I'm here!!!! Big Gental Hugs, Peach
