I was born with a slightly curved spine. My mom was given the option of putting me in a body brace, but the doctor said it may just straighten out on its own, so she decided against it.
I am now 20 years old and am finding myself more and more limited in the physical activities I can participate in. It sure doesn't help that I work in the food and beverage business where you stand on your feet all day and do occasional heavy lifting. What worries me is that my knees are now becoming painful after work as well as my back to the point that I am limping. I used to have my mom "pop" my back for me which would help for a while, but the pain would always come back. Does anyone know of successful treatments or exercises that could help me out? I would really appreciate any positive feedback. Thanks! Posted on 04/19/09, 05:04 am |

maybe pt could help and strenthen the muscles around and help change the posture of your back as well.

I have slight scoliosis also. They found it when I was in school. My daughter came home from school with a note also. I am 43 years old now. I have always had to go to chiropractor all of my life when needed, and so does she. Now I have a torn disc. I have had bulging disc, and my daughter suffers from knee problems. If anything can be done. Fix it NOW! If not...Do not lift heavy things, and see a chiropractor on a regular basis. My hips get out of wack from stepping off of a curb the wrong way or from getting down out of a high truck. My ribs even get out of place as does my chest bone. Again, Find a Good chiropractor and be careful. Good Luck

Go online and search for stretches. that really helps. Find a good chiropractor that does not say he can fix anything from asthma to pimples. Massages help but most of all, know your limits. Get someone to help you lift.

my 27 yr old son has scoliosis. I always thought he slumped and use to get on him aboutt not sitting up straight til he went to the doctor at age 8 and the doctor said, so u have scoliosis. I said what, no he has a sore throat. I was then told about scoliosis. The doc had it too.
He said he had to be careful not to lift heavy things and to use heat and tylenol for any pain and for me to quit telling him to sit up straight. His back has straighten some but he still has problems as well.

I am 20 years old too! I was just diagnosed with mild Scoliosis and a twisted pelvis. If I would have never gone to a Chiropractor they would have never found out what was wrong with me. I went to the doctors and they did xrays and said oh you just have arthritis and shoved me out the door!
If it wasn't bad before from my Fibromyalgia is cripples me now. I have to lay down to give my back a rest but when I am not using my joints and muscles they tighten up. I used to have my friends do the same thing, but now I am in so much pain I am scared to have anyone try and pop it. I would always have this feeling like my tailbone needs to be cracked back into place. I am so glad someone mentioned looking up stretches I am going to try to see if I can do any of those. I wish I could give some advice, I was just happy to find a post like this, and even a back pain group. I have only just started seeing the Chiropractor and finally have evidence that I am not crazy my back hurts! They ordered an MRI...but they have done a few treatments that seem to help a little. The ultrasound with icy hot felt great and the heat endorphine current machine felt alright. I wonder what kind of shoes everyone uses? It seems as if my shoes have made my feet worse lately. I thought my stomach pain was bad, ha back pain is the worst thing I have ever felt in my life. I have been thinking about asking for some kind of brace, because until this MRI,I can't just be in chronic pain.

Hott Cali---When I work long or busy hours and my back starts hurting I use my back brace I got from Raley's. It works well enough and is cheaper than having the doctor get you one.
It is so nice to hear of someone else my own age with this problem. I will start doing stretches. Do you have any tips on finding a good chiropractor? I don't want to end up with someone who will rip me off.

AmyLH~ Thanks for the tip, I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend a lot on one from the doctor that didn't look to comfy. I hope Rite Aid or Walgreens might be like Raley's?
This is my first Chiropractor so I haven't had too much experience yet. But I do know some red flags that would send me straight out of one of their offices. My Chiro came recommended by family friends one a professional massager and the other an actual PCP. This guy I see wouldn't even touch me until he got x-rays, this is good! If anyone wants to adjust you or manipulate before, hobble out the door. He says he can't cure me and there is only so much Chiropractors can do. But you can gain quality of life back and depending on what stage your back is in, will make all the difference. He doesn't claim to treat asthma, pimples, or any other crazy thing. At first I was hesitant but once my back pain got so bad I had to go. Now I am going 3-4 time a week because I am in so much pain but it will gradually decrease over the next few months. Thank the lord I have insurance but they are kind of lame and will only cover 31 visits. Honestly my Chiro is a million times smarter then my PCP and has way more education. Try to find one with not only nutritional background but other degrees as well. Keep in touch, and if you ever want to talk about the kinds of treatments they do or anything else. We need to get some of our mobility back before summer, it is my Bday next week and I walk like I'm 90. I have been going to College in sweats all week :)
