okay, well first of all let me just say this. It never fails with this topic and has never failed in the two years that i have been on here that when this topic comes up, it always ends up in an argument so let's please remember that we are all here for support and that medication is a personal decision. You may medicate, you may not but it's no one's place here to state whether someone else is right or wrong for doing so or not doing so.
that being said, yes, i do medicate. I have tried it both ways. My son is currently on risperdone, a very low dosage of .5 mg. he gets that at night because he has gained some weight and giving it to him during the day was causing him to eat more. why??? because like i said, i've tried it both ways and without medication, he was all over the place . Now i don't just count on doing medication only for him, we do therapy, we do role play, we do social stories, i get him involved in social situations. Since we started the risperdone in june, his speech is much better, there has not been one act of aggression from him since i began it. right now, he doesn't even have a behavioral plan in place at school.because there has not been a need. I choose to medicate because it has made it easier for him, NOT FOR ME, HIM. He's happier, he's doing so much better.

It should be a personal choice when a person medicates. They should not be made to feel guilty because they do. Unless you are in the position of having to deal with certain situations you really can't understand how hard it is. My husband and I have medicated our son since he was very young. He is presently on Fluoxamine for his OCD and anxiety. He says it helps him. He has ASD. We have tried many different meds over the years incluing sleep meds,as Thomas used to only sleep 1-2 hours and we were all feeling the effects of this after a few months.

Well... I did have Sean on medication... Risperdal and Prozac. I have taken him off of them because I felt that Sean wasn't Sean on them if that makes any sense. I was doing research on these meds and I read to many people saying that they felt terrible on them... that is what I think was happening to Sean. I asked him today if he felt better not on the medicine and he told me yes... his head felt better. I can't say to anyone else since this is such a personal choice... for my Sean... right now I am not going to give him anything. His behaviors are a bit hightend and he seems to be nervous leaving home... but I am hoping to work him through it. Sean, as of lately just seems more like the Sean I used to know. He was kinda in the clouds before and I was thinking it was his autism and now I am thinking it was the medicine. Not sure what the future holds for us in regards to medication... not sure if we will go back to it... truthfully everything seems so uncertain lately. I just want Sean to be happy and he seems happy to me lately...not very compliant but happy. That is what is important. Hugs Denise
