H1N1 & Autism....

Hi all,

I wish I could say we won the lottery....maybe even a trip somewhere exotic....but NOPE....we have the H1N1!! Oh the joy! (rolling my eyes)

So, here's my question.
How do you get your kids to take their horrible tasting medicine?

Our dilemma.....
Danno, our youngest has been throwing up since last Wednesday. He's keeping fluids in.....but will toss everything up again when he has to take his meds. The ONLY beverage he'll drink is chocolate milk. Otherwise it's gotta be in a noodle or bread form!

And our Andypants....he's on a nebulizer. These meds make him so wired I can't calm him down. It's as if his worst Autism symptoms are all jacked up.

If you have encountered these things....what have you done to help your kids ease into the meds that helps them get better? We have had to have our kids hospitalized in the past as they couldn't take the meds they needed. And this is even more traumatizing for them.

I feel like I've made every concoction out there known to man to get these kids to take their medicine (the cold malts, the jellies, the slipping it into their sippy cups.....) Where is Mary Poppins when I need her!

Any tips for Autistic kids would greatly be appreciated!

Thanks!!!

" What i have done in the past with all three of my kids is for fever relife i now they sell supositories. So if they don't take it by mouth you put it in the other way. Also with Eddie i have had the medication conpunded into supusitories they can camponde any med you jjust meed to find a compound pharmecie in your area. They usualy make it into anything you want including candy like gummy bears. It realy works also you can try putting it in there milk it also works. I hope this helps Eddie has gone throw the H1N1 not that long ago and that is the way i got his meds in. Well good look. "

" We got strep and the flu last week and it has been horrible at our house too....I know that some medications can come in pill form....amoxicillian for instance but most places only carry it in adult doses so its hard to find.....some things also can be given as a shot....we got a shot for his flu and pills for his strep....we couldnt find anything that Ette would drink the meds with.....

We held him down and plugged his nose last year when this happened but doing that twice a day for 2 weeks just isnt possible or advisable....he wouldnt come near us for weeks afterward.... "

" I wish I had an answer for you, but I have the same problem with my son. I dread every time he gets sick, because I know he won't/can't take anything to help him feel/get better. He will gag and throw up any liquids I try to give him, and he won't take pills either. I can't disguise his medicine in anything, because he always figures it out. I just wanted to let you know you aren't alone. "

" Sorry you all got the flu. We had a bout in our school the last week of the first six weeks, last month. My 10 year old was out for 3 days, as well as lots of other kids. Oliver did get a cough and stuffy ears, but he did not get ill, like his brother. I think the Kindergarten was more diligent to keep the hands washed, and the big kids were not.so mindful, or one or two go to school and infect the others.
Oliver had the experience of actually improving with his speech and behavior. There is often times the AS kids respond to the virus' by improving. Go figure.
One thing I remember a couple years ago, Oliver was really sick for a week at a time, for months. He got better using colloidal silver. It is tasteless, and I didn't need to give him but a small spoonful.
I do not use OTC, infact there are many cases when combinations have cause deaths.
I hope you are feeling better soon. "

" We're finally getting better. On Wed, we had to take him in to give him a shot of antibiotics. Yah, I don't know if I'll win the mommy award for that one from Danno.
We had our recheck today. He's getting better but we're starting another round of antibiotics.

I'm thinking there is a need here...I just need to figure out a way to help these little ones make it easier for them.
The docs did recommend the tylenol suppositories. I'm thankful the fever came down so we didn't have to go that route!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm going to keep them for future use! "

" I'm so glad to hear they're getting better. How are YOU?

On the nebulizer - You might try lowering the dosage some. My #3 son had some trouble with the jumpiness so we just didn't use the whole dose. He still got his relief but not the jumpiness.

I think the dosage was just a little too high for Jake. Those things are standardized. Not all kids fit in the standard-sized box. "

" Sorry to hear your little ones are sick - hope they are feeling better.

My son also WILL NOT take any medications. Detects them in juice, applesause, ice cream - pretty much everything. My son also had H1n1 this last week. He was sick for 10 days. We ended up having to give him the tylenol suppositories. Also, in the past have had to give shots for antiobiotics. I also think there appears to be a great need here!!!! "
