Today we met with the MN Autism Project. Dr Thompson is great. He's been in the business of Autism for over 40 yrs. This man KNOWS autism. And I'm excited to have his team work with my boys.
But he asked an interesting question. What did my Hubby and I do for work. My hubby is a computer programmer. And I'm now, a stay at home mom. Prior to this, I used to be a stylist and I worked for an Medical benefits company in customer service (nothing fancy). But then he shared that a study has been done. Apparently it's very common to have at least one parent if not both that are in Information Technologies to some degree. And it's exceptionally rare to have both parents not in that field. This got me to thinking...my cousin who was recently dx with Autism at the age of 19 .....his dad is a computer guy too. My Brother in Law, who has two kids who were speech delayed, he too is a programmer. This just fascinated me. Dr Thompson also shared that at first this was a "awe common sort of statistic, but once the study was done it proved it". I suppose it proves that the researchers are really looking into all avenues to try and figure out Autism. Posted on 06/24/09, 11:06 pm |

Hi Challenger~
Oh, believe me hun, 'genius' is not what I was suggesting! But after watching my husband for the last 8+ years and watching my son now for 4 yrs....it just makes sense. My hubby, bless is heart, just sometimes is clueless about things. His common sense is sometimes lost. Yet he can write brilliant programs for work. His skills are just unbalance. So, to see the link between the two is very clear to me some days.

I have been to conferences on the latest brain research on ASD. This si my best ability to relate that information. Everyone of us may have some genetic abmormalities -little things. We may have some sensory issues, or we may have a speech delay, or whatever. Some may have more or less. Two parents can each have a few. That does not make either on be on the spectrum. However, some people get far more of those particular brain differences ad that results in a spectrum disorder. I have learned form years of diagnosing ASD's that everyione is unique. Even no two kids on the spectrum are the same. I can tell you from meeting after meeting with parents that quite often the mother does all of the talking and verbal interacting. The father is quieter and, yes, quite often they are a computer programmer. They are probably more comfortable with computers than people but that alone does make them on the spectrum. It is just one trait. Their child has more of the traits though. Usually, I see this pattern more with Asperger's though then with autism (even high functioning autism).

I've seen autistic kids drawn to computers. My daughter had a boy who's mother forced the school district to mainstream her son. I helped out in the class periodically and this boy totally disrupted the class until the teacher let him sit at the computer and do his schoolwork. When computer time ended, he was back to disrupting the place. It was a difficult classroom.
Perhaps the connection is that parents of autistic children have just a few of the genes and are drawn to tech. professions because that's their comfort zone. My niece's boy is moderately autistic. She's a stay-at-home mom (worked in a college bookstore prior to motherhood) and doesn't seem that computer-savvy. Her husband is an elementary school teacher. Dad is obsessed with Star Wars and spends some time on his computer editing videos.
