I have a child whos five with ASD, people talk about about high functioning autism and aspergers but i dont know where my child is on the spectrum. She has very limited words and understanding but i dont really know whether she understands more than i think she does. She has rituals and some obbessive behaviour, she copys play from scenes in cartoons rather than using imagination. Im so worried about what he future holds for her, some family members keep saying she will grow out of it by the time shes an adult but in my heart i think i know thats not true. I would love to hear from any adults with asd or parents of older children to give me some idea of what im facing later on.

Hugs to you! Instead of worrying about later, I would focus on the now. There are lots of intervention programs which can greatly improve and help. We have been using ABA for 1 year and our 4-year old girl (severe autism) has improved quite a bit. Our 6-year old boy (high functioning) is responding well to RDI. The best thing you can do for your child is to become an advocate for them - find out what is available in your area and make a committment to help - it's not too late. You are right - she is not going to grow out of it. What you face later on depends on what you do now. It may sound weird, but with all the treatments available, it's a "good" time to have a child with autism. Good luck!!!!!!

ABA is Applied Behavior Analysis. RDI is Relationship Development Intervention. There is also IBI which is known as Intensive Behavioral Intervention. They are programs aimed at helping children with autism spectrum disorders. Very useful if started early.

hi Bex, every child is different as the day but here is my experiance to share with you,
my son is 10 and does not do some of the behaviours did he when he was younger. he is sever. he does well.. he now will go on a swing when a few years ago hed scream and run away when he would see kids on swings, it is his fav. now. the only "growing out of it" i have seen with my son and the children from school is they mature as any other child does. thier interest change. steven is doing more apporpriate play now tossing a ball catching it, very simple play but it is play* not spinning etc. aba worked very well for steven and i enbed it in our daily life. it is a good tool for teaching our children. Pecs help as well Picture exchange. you love her and keep on being the great mom you are with that keen understanding that yes she does understand more than people think. :)
