My son is 11. His autism is mild. He was DA at 18 months old as severe. Said he would need to be placed in a home. I choose to get a second opinion from TEACCH. But in the meanwhile, I put him in a private school where he would get therapy. I waited over a year to get in with TEACCH. Taking his first eval with me and a notebook of questions, I went alone to TEACCH. His dad at the time was in complete denial and you know what, thats ok, he needed that then. With all this in hand and all my research, I went in search of answers and help! His first DA was severe autism... TEACCH DA'd him at mild to mederate after only a year of therapy. We went with it, Therapy, therapy, therapy... Dr after Dr, eval after eval... Therapy was working!! It still does. He does horse back riding, swimming all of these things work for him... Medication is not an issue for us.

9 years later, he is reading at grade level, picking up math like crazy, he loves math! He can tell you all sorts of amazing things about alligators and tigers. He is brillant! He is a sponge of knowledge... All of this from a boy they said would never tell me he loves me, that he would never know love.

In case you haven't noticed, there is one thing about me, I DO NOT GIVE UP! I had seen children that were way on the other end of the spectrum and my son wasn't there... They gave up on him at least thats how they made me feel.. We didn't, once his dad came to terms with his first born son wasn't like he thought he would be, we went forward, looking for anything to help him... Never once was meds ever discussed for him by the Dr. Not once. Oh sure he has problems with his bowels and needs a little help "going" sometimes, we use medication. But for behavior modifications, therapy works for him.

In no way do I say this to judge. By no means. I don't know what some of you go thru on the daily bases with your children and I am sure that you are doing what you and your childs Dr thinks is best for them. Medication is not bad, we just don't need it for him.

I am sick of it being said that I am anti meds. THAT IS A LIE. I am not in judgement of anyone of you. We each do what works for our children.

In closing, I apologize if you are offended by anything I have posted. But don't take on someone elses perspective and twist my words. I simply have stated what the last 9 years have been like for me and my family.

Now, feel free to press that ignore button.

" Thank you fro sharing. It is a long struggle and I know what it is like to have your heartfelt posts taken wrong and then be bashed, and made the "bad guy" I find your story inspiring and appreciate your time to post it. My child is not on meds and the behavior work is really helping. I know some people are not happy that we are working things out that way, and I am beyond all the judgement, so I hope they are ignoring me because I am in this to stay. "

" Well I am fortunate enough to have a child that doesn't require meds either but I would not presume to attack someone who's having to medicate their child....some of these children do require meds and if they help them function then I am all for them....better living thru chemistry. "

" I think this is great that everyone is being nice. I learn alot from these post & don't like it when everyone fights! My daughter is only 2 and I hope she doesn't end up requiring medication, but will definitely be open to it if necessary & will probably come here for advice if she does. "

" That is an inspring story!!!
Whatever works for our kids is the Key.
No 2 people are the same my son needs meds as well as his therepy and school.
What got me about about your post was that the doctors told you that your son would need to be in a home!!! Your son has proven that NO ONE knows where our children will be. The Children will SHOW us. ((HUGS))) "

" mine is 7 now, veral but not fully conversational, smart, silly, goofy, hard to focus, sensry stuff going on prevents him from being his best some days. Almost fully toilet trained, just when distracted or sick or sensory stuff, he either forgets or misses the body's signal. Is begining to read, the school work given him is about a grade level behind so far, but hey! not bad considering every other year they didn't have him follow grade level work. He's in a special class with 4 other boys. He's also been receiving IBI therapy for about a year and a half and it's made a big difference.

He's also not on meds and it's hopeful to believe that in as few as another 4 years he might be viewed as mostly "typical". Thanks for sharing. If you have any additional tips I'd be much appreciated. "
