How to deal with autistic little sister
Watch this
View More Posts Ignore
So, I'm 17 years old and I have a 7 year old little sister who has speech apraxia... It gets so frustrating because she gets what ever she wants.. ALL the TIME!! My mom just gives her w/e she wants.. My mom is convinced that she has NO concept of right and wrong... She is in the 2nd Grade, and for some absurd reason is able to stay up watching television until 1:00am and 2:00am in the morning.. That's later that I am up most nights, and I'm a SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL!!! And when I try to redirect my sister, I get yelled at for overstepping.. I would believe that she has no control over her behavior if when she when she was around other. more strict, family members, she acted the same way; spoiled, entitled, and out of control... Please help!

" Autism can be very hard on siblings as well as caregivers. If our sister has autism (not knowing her profile) there is a lot more going on than just speech apraxia. It is possible that your parents cannot get her to sleep and it makes it much easier for the whole family to let her stay up than to force her to bed. However, at age 7 she should be in school, unless she is homeschooled, and regular sleep habits are going to be essential. I recommend a support group for sibling of kids with autism. You can connect to others in your own situation. The link is www.autismsiblings.org. You might ask the kids on that page how they have handled similar situations. Also, if your parents are not connected to a support group, this site would be a good one for them. Additionally, try talking to them again and explain how it makes you feel. If that gets you nowhere, try to understand that, while they love you very much, they may be in a very demanding situation too. Good luck. "
