My son Dan bites his hand just under his thumb,he does this when he is happy, sad, anxious. This has resulted in him haveing a huge callous which is starting to split and causing him discomfort. I have mentioned it to GP and he told me to layer it in moisturiser which i have been doing. I dont really know how to break this behaviour. Any ideas?

" My best friend growing up chewed on the back of her hand when she was nervous. Her parents put vile concoctions on the spot, with her agreement even, but she had a very hard time quitting.

She quit when we started school and someone made fun of her, but I'd catch a glimpse of her at it every now and then when she was nervous, clear through high school.

I haven't seen her in a few years, but unless she's had plastic surgery, she still bears the scars - bubbly looking red bumps. We're 50 now.

It never bothered me but it might have bothered others. I'm pretty sure it bothered her mother. Everything about her bothered her mother... She and I never really discussed it. We were too busy with our marvelous adventures. "

" The Autistic mind can be a very active and stressful mind. The problem could be related to stress and teeth grinding. It also helps me to release stress by putting pressure on my jaw. Get your son a mouth guard and if that stops. You should see a TMJ specialists not a dentist. "

" My son just started chewing on his shirt or coat, he also chews in between his thumb and (pointing) finger. He does it whenever he is nervous too. He doesn't have any marks on the hand yet, but I am trying to distract him everytime I see him doing this. "
