Any experience with Guanfacine (Tenex)?

We are going to do a trial of Guanfacine (Tenex) for my ASD son (age 9). He has severe hyperactivity and attention problems. We tried Clonidine pill and patch. The patch was great until my son was able to get it off and started to chew on it. The pill was a roller-coaster -- he was sleepy then hyper.
Would like some feedback on this drug if any of you have used it. THANKS Posted on 03/05/09, 10:03 pm |

My son is currently on Tenex! We have gone back and forth between the clonidine and the Tenex for years.....I can tell ya...the Tenex works MUCH BETTER FOR MY SON!!!!! He's on 3mg a day and many other med's as well....now....here's something VERY IMPORTANT....Watch your son in the heat...DO NOT let him get overheated nor over-exorted! This can induce a heat stroke! I am not trying to scare ya....its been a wonderful med for my son! Just that this med lowers blood pressure and when in heat/ or over-exorted it CAN cause this reaction...My son is on a high dose....he weighs over 200 pds and is 15 now. He started the med at age 5 I think? And that was yo-yo-ing between the 2 listed above. I will tell ya....for the first 3 to 4 weeks....ya can expect a lot of sleepiness....and I mean a lot...I almost took him off it cause I thought it was over-sadating him.....so glad I didn't! I have heard other moms say that their children have become even more aggressive on these meds.....IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE CHILD! However, your son has already been on Clonidine and the Tenex is in the same family of drugs......so..not likely to happen.....but I am not a DR.....just based on years of experience of these 2 meds...with my son..... Hope this helps hun!!!! Hang in there! I know its tough! I hate having to medicate my son...but...its what has kept him living in my home...we've been the route of instution/ group home with him.....and that was not a pretty sight! It was AWLFUL! He was beaten by 3 male staff members! So.....if your son needs the meds....by all means....hun.....he needs em! I am here if ya need me hun! Hugs! years.
