Failed minimally invasive surgery for AFIB

I had a minimally invasive surgery to cure my atrial fibrillation. The surgery was over one year ago, performed by one of the top cardiac ablation surgeons in the nation at one of the top teaching centers in the US. I did all of the research, asked all the right questions, requested referrels, and thought I did everything right. Nothing could have prepared me for the post-operative pain that I would experience following the procedure. Everything would have been worth it if the procedure had worked. But, here I am a year later still in Afib feeling more miserable than before the surgery.
I have been doing a lot of research and have found that there more patients out there with the same experiences and outcomes that I have experienced. But, I haven't been able to reach out to any of them and ask what they are specifically doing to get some relief, and what their next options are. Does anyone out there have a similar experience they can share with me, and any advice? Posted on 11/01/09, 11:11 am |

Hi ,
You are not on your own , Ablationa's /Mazes / Cardioversion's / Pills and more pills ? I really think that there still needs to be a lot more research on Afib and the Cures as after my experience and the studies I have done and also the people that I correspond to regarding "Cures"? I had a Failed Maze procedure 3 and 1/2 years ago and I am in Perm /fib which I am living with because I think most of the Doctors and Cardio's are clueless and it is "Pot Luck" if you get some relief or not. I am on Warfarin and Atenolol , I also had a Aorta valve replaced at the same time as the Failed maze and my valve is mechanical and I will need to be on Warfarin for the rest of my life and it also protects me from clots withe A/Fib. How old are you DMcKiness? and where do you live? try not to stress too much and do your best to keep your mind off it otherwise it gnaws at you and it can really get you down, this forum is wonerful with many people willing to help so do not be afraid to speak out and say how you are feeling ? Regards..........Kvntoday

I am so sorry you have had this bad experience. I don't understand why they chose to do that procedure. You need a very experienced and knowledgeable doctor who has performed many ablations and is an expert in rhythm control. If I were you I would consider traveling to another country if there is no one where you are. I was in the hospital overnight and although I did have some pain for the first week, it was easily managed with Tylenol. Although I did have to have two ablations, all is well now. If you want, I can give you the name of my doctor and group near Stanford in California. I am very happy with their care.

Hi,
I am sorry but I am now a total Sceptic as far as Cardios and Surgeons are concerned regarding Ablations / Maze Procedures and the like . 3 and 1/2 years ago I was assured by my surgeon that while I was having a Mechanical Aorta fitted that he could perform the Full Maze Procedure and he said he had a 85% success rate ? Well now I am in Perm A/Fib and the Surgeon and the Cardio really don't give a damn, they just tell me to live with it , take my Warfarin and Atenolol and we will see you in a few years. I am 64 years old, have a otherwise healthy heart but I can tell you all that I do not trust any of these professional people and once they have got your money it's "See You Jack" . I have tried to get some dialogue with my surgeon but he will not reply and I feel like suing the Pants off him for what he has done but he does not care at all . The Surgeon was Dr John Riordan, Wakefield Heart Centre , Wellington New Zealand and my Cardio is Dr Mark Simmonds at Wakefield . Kvntoday.....New Zealand
