I can't seem to get my coumadin level right. I hate taking this medicine, I feel more violated than the ablation procedure. I was a vegetarian for many years and I've introduced turkey burgers and this week chicken breasts because I've lost weight. Now I make beets, radishes, yellow squash, mushrooms, eggplant, sweet potato, corn, raw tomatoes with skinned cucumber. with my rice and beans I eat 1/2 an avocado instead of a whole one. Any one with similar issues and comments and or suggestions? thanks

How does one obtain a COAGUCHECK machine, please?
Must they be prescribed by a doctor -- are they available for over-the-counter purchase at the local pharmacy? I will be in America the end of November, and am guessing they are loads cheaper than here in the UK. Cheapest I have seen here, ordered online, is equivalent to about $779 USD. Do the machines give a reading only, or also a recommended dosage? Thanks, and hope you are feeling well! Debb :)

In the US, is a COAGUCHECK machine available at the local pharmacy or must it be obtained thru a doctor and one's health insurance? I presume that the strips cost extra...?
I will be in the US for a couple of weeks this month and would love to get one for myself! Thanks, Debb :)

I'm taking Coumadin now because of a diagnosed a fib. With each increase in dosage I get more agitated and lose more sleep. I haven't slept in 3 weeks since I started it. My blood pressure goes up with each increased dose they give. I have tried to tell the doctors this but they blow me off and say that "It shouldn't do that". Any one with anything like this?

Hi Wheezer1, you seem to be having a difficult time. Is is essential that you have Coumadin. I am 66 with A Fib of 17 years and still have aspirin only. I know I would have serious trouble with Coumadin as I am sensitive to tablets. I know I will probably have to have it eventually if I am in A Fib all the time, at present it is only a small portion of the day and it is not really noticeable. It is a concern that your doctor doesn't believe you that you are not sleeping with the drug. I had a very rare reaction to a drug that caused serious leg pain; the doctors scratched their heads and couldn't understand it until one doctor in casualty worked it out. Ask your doctor if it is essential that you have Coumadin at this stage. Good luck Ruth CR

When I was on Coumadin, my doctor said to eat whatever I wanted and they would work around me and the levels were fine. I eat many, vegetables, broccoli, salads, etc. so I would take 7 mgs. most days and 9 mgs. two days per week.
I would encourage you to think about ablation if you are a good candidate. It can work miracles if you have a very good, experienced doctor and the risk is less than the risk from stroke with afib.
