Hey guys, it's too bad I've found you on what might be my way out.. but there's no assurance that ablations are 100% effective, so we might be seeing each other for awhile. I'm having a rough time of it right now, and I hope that talking to people who understand what it's like to have AFib can be a bit of a net for me to fall back on.
My story is pretty average. I'm 21 right now, and I've felt palpitations ever since I was 12 years old. Maybe 5-10 minutes at a time. I remember asking my mom about it and she said she gets the same thing, and it's ok. And it was OK, until December of 2007! That's when the palpitations got longer. I wasn't sure if that was a big deal or not, half an hour or so. One Saturday, three hours in, my boyfriend resolved that it was time to head to the ER despite my objections and was about to call a taxi when they just stopped. Frustrating. Then in February of 2008 I started this new chapter of being an AFib patient. I woke up with palpitations (what I called them at the time, it was full blown AFib) and called work, told them I wouldn't be on time - I was going to wait for my heart to calm down and then come in. Four hours later, no change. I called the Health Link line, which connects you to an RN. When I told her I had no way to get to the hospital.. she connected me with 9-1-1! My RHR was 198, my BP was all over the place. But the whole morning at the hospital I thought I was going to be sent home! That obviously didn't happen and I was in AFib for a good 24-30 hours. I left the hospital the next day with a cardiologist, a diagnosis, and a very worried family. It's been a year and a half since then. I've been through many meds, all of which I grow a tolerance for after about 5 weeks at a time! I've also had an amazing cardiologist, and some other doctors who weren't the best. I've had nurses accuse me of being a drug addict and employers who don't understand my needs. It's a strange beast to be a very young heart patient. Currently, I'm in such a state that I can't do much physical activity - I can't work for the summer to save up for school in September, even :( My cardio advocated for me very well when he saw how I was feeling, and I'm FINALLY having an EF Ablation July 24! I'm ecstatic... we're also moving into our first home on July 28. It's a good month. But it isn't easy. My family, my boyfriend and my friends... they've been around me with this problem for a long time, but I've never been this sick. A lot of them are a bit scared, and my boyfriend is doing his best to understand (he's been a saint through this entire thing). My parents both live in another province, so it isn't easy for them either. Some days I just want to complain about PVCs (thumpin and bumpin!), low blood pressure, INR tests, and everything else... without having to explain what they are beforehand. And for the curious, currently taking 180 diltiazem, 600 propafenone, 7mg wafarin (but they're still stabilizing my INR for my surgery), 81 ASA... and allegra for hayfever. Taking warfarin and having hayfever SUCKS! I also picked up my Fragmin injections yesterday. My surgery is getting real! But the next three weeks will be long and challenging, and the recovery takes so long to see any results, that I'm curious how other people handled it. So, hello! Let's be buddies! I am also new to this group. I joined a couple of days ago. My post is "New to AFIB need advice." I know what you mean with finding an outlet to just vent some frustrations/concerns without having to first explain. So far I have found some very helpful advice.
What did they say causes your AFIB?

Well, I cause my cardiologist a lot of grief. I have nothing that should predispose me - zero previous drug use or smoking, occasional drinking, completely normal BMI, okay diet/nutrition. My Echo and cardiac x-ray came away clean, so did my thyroid. They're just assuming I'm somehow broken because there's no idea what caused this to happen, other than the vague possibility of genetics. Heart failure runs in the family and my mom experiences very minor palpitations, so I think they're going on it just being a genetic mess-up.
I've recently confused them again when at a dress fitting my legs went blue and puffy, but my feet stayed pink, and as soon as I moved my legs got better. Called my cardiologist about that and they replied, "can't you just be NORMAL for once?!" :P I saw your post, too. It's a strange experience!

A-fib just suddenly appears in alot of people. I had no heart problems, no blood pressure problems or anything like that when I developed a-fib. I had my ablation for a-fib and a-flutter in January 08. I have been in NSR ever since. My recovery was not long at all. I felt soo good when I was released from the hospital that I went shopping. If I worked, I would have been able to return to work in a week. Good luck!! Wishing you well, and wishing you enough...

That's SUCH great news! The hospital literature makes it sound just horrible, did they really make you lay flat for 12 hours because OH GOD just knock me out...
I'm glad you could go shopping ;) my mom and mom-in-law will both be in town, and I've got a new townhouse to decorate 4 days after surgery. It's great to hear how awesome people feel after the ablation.

How awesome "I" felt after the ablation. Remember, everybody recovers differently. I was lucky where I had no pain and no bleeding in the groin. Some people I know did have pain and bleeding. So, lets hope and pray that you recover as well as I did. Yes, I did have to lay flat for hours!!! The ablation itself took almost 8 hours. I was asleep 90% of the time. After the procedure, I had to lay flat for another 6 hours. Around 10pm I was finally able to sit up and the first thing I did was get out of bed and walked to the bathroom!! The only problem I had was that my back hurt soo bad from having to lay flat for soo long. The nurses did give me some pain meds for my back pain, and it did go away in a day or two. I also had some chest pain whenever I took a deep breath in, but that went away in a day or two also. You will have some limitations after the procedure. I was not able to lift anything heavy for the first week. I also had to limit my stair use for the first week. I was not able to do any strenous excercises for the first month. If you have any other question concerning the ablation, just ask. There are several people on this forum that have had the procedure and we will be more than happy to try to answer as best we can. Good Luck!!

Sometimes the doctors do not know what may cause your a-fib. When I was first diagnoised I was told it was "lone" a-fib. That means that I had no other contributing factors like heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid problems.

Yeah, pretty sweet way for me to get out of moving furniture.. I must be a genius :)
I don't foresee me doing a whole lot for at least the week after the ablation. If I get the furniture shopping itch, well, IKEA has a website.

My bedroom set came from IKEA. It is one of my favorite stores. I could spend the whole day in there just walking around and checking everything out. And of cource, you have to have lunch there!
