AIDS and AFIB

I was reading an article about AIDS and how many people are surviving through middle age and beyond with AIDS. In the article, it said 1.2 million people in the US have AIDS. Sounds like alot right? Well, 2.2 million people in the US have AFIB. When you compare all the attention AIDS has gotten... OK I realize AIDS is communicable... it really made me think. AFIB has gotten little attention by contrast. The CARMA Center, http://healthsciences.utah.edu/carm... , estimates the number of people with AFIB is 5 million.

True dat.
But, like comparing apples to oranges though - for sure. Other than the fact they both form catchy acronyms. AIDS as a condition is a seriously bad, death sentence and with irreversible debilitating circumstances - in many/most cases. I think it's time for the Medical Establishment to call/name it (AF) something else? No one can figure out what it is or means. :(

Ok, I just wrote a long post and when I pushed Add, it disappeared. Will try again. I think we need a Hollywood star to push a fib to get attention. Just like Michael J. Fox brought a lot of attention and research money to Parkinson's. Everyone is aware of it now. Even though Barry has his web site (which I learned about on this forum), the general public is still probably unaware. We need some of the people Petey has mentioned who are afflicted with call attention to it and get some serious research money to pursue cures for it.

Agreed, Jennifer Aniston would be a great candidate. Very believable and highly popular. So what if she doesn't have AF, she's an actress. ;) Come to think of it maybe Ellen D-G. can start doing alot more!!

Ellen has a huge following... Gene Simmons (bass player KISS) does too. Howie Mandel, John Mayer, Biden and Cheney do, George HW Bush, John Edwards (scratch that one) Jerry West, Larry Bird, Hakeem Olajawan, olympians, Barry Manilow, Herb Alpert, Mario Lemieux, Robin Williams, Dr John Mandrola... what a diverse group!!!
The TV message goes like this... "What do these people have in common?" Cut to... Barry Manilow next to Gene Simmons Biden next to Cheney George HW Bush next to Howie Mandel Hakeem Olajuwan next to Robin Williams Jerry West (in Lakers uniform) next to Larry Bird (in Celtics uniform) Herb Alpert with trumpet next to Mario Lemieux with Penguins Hockey uniform and stick Birgit Fischer, Olympic rowing champion with oars and rowing outfit next to Sir Roger Moore (actor) (cut to...) Dr John Mandrola, EP doctor and afib sufferer, on his bike (gets off and puts on white coat with stethoscope) (From the below website:) Dr Mandrola: "You might be surprised to learn of the many celebrities with A-Fib. From the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL to track & field athletics and Olympic champions; Political leaders and public servants to musicians, actors and performers. Atrial Fibrillation doesn't discriminate..." Tack on, "Hi, I'm Dr John Mandrola, electrophsiologist and cardiologist... I am not just a doctor I'm a husband, a father, an avid bicyclist, and... (pause) I have atrial fibrillation, also known as afib. Afib is... (facts/stats/and serious goes here). http://pinterest.com/ssryan90265/ce... This wouldn't be hard to write/stage... of course, getting that many people together would be a real trick. But I think big. petey

I forgot the most important part... It starts with Ellen narrating in the beginning. After Dr John is done near the end , Ellen says... "Oh and... I have atrial fibrillation too. It's no joke!

OK, I also want to throw in John Mayer singing Heartbreak Warfare cutting in and out before, during, and at the end of the TV spot. I'll give John a call tonight. Anyone have his number?

Agreed on John Edwards.
Scratch Gene Simmons too. Sadly he is a Dirt Bag of the highest/most extreme level (regardless of his affiliation w/KISS) and he would want way too much money anyways $$$$. Otherwise looking good!! Maybe Betty White can say something too after all she's old enough to have it X2. Lol. ;)

That hat was funny, the comment about Betty White...But I agree about this getting more attention if someone famous like Ellen...or how about Oprah be dx with afib.
Lupus is another illness that does not get a lot of attention. Like afib and AIDS, Lupus has no cure.

We can substitute the guy from Aha ("Take on Me" Video: Magne Furuholmen) for Gene Simmons... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/a...
Here's the video fror you younger people... he is the guy that gets the girl. :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV1... BTW, Tony Blair (England) has afib also. He had some kind of "operation". petey

That was funny, Petey! You should write it up and send it to them!!
I saw the clip where Ellen talks about her a fib. She did say she had a surgery which might have caused it. I had the impression that maybe she doesn't have it anymore. does she still have it? Barry was starting to get the ball rolling, but still not too many people know about it. We need attention before research money will roll in...
