On Saturday hubbie and I went over to a family BBQ. I really wasn't feeling that good but went anyway. Well about three in the afternoon I felt I was in Afib so went to lie down. It didn't seem like it was going to go into NSR so we came home. I had Afib from 3 to 8 pm and then went into NSR and the next day I felt fine.
On Monday I went into Afib at 5:00 pm and was still there at 12:00 pm so we decided I should go to Emergency I had never gone that long before I was afraid I was not going to convert on my own. I thought "cardioversion" Got to the hospital and was admitted still in afib. Doc did all the tests EKG, blood work etc etc. He asked me If I wanted to be cardioverted and I said not particularly that I normally convert on my own. By this time it was at 1:00 am and he said we would wait until 4:00 am and if I hadn't come out of it he would do the cardioverting. Well at 3:45 am he started to get me ready. The nurse came and prepped me with an IV and pads on my back and front. Then the R.S (Respitary Specialist) came and put an oxygen mask on me. I was all set to go when I converted on my own. Phew was that a close call or what? The doc couldn't believe it. He joked about not being able to send a bill in for it. Not that I would pay being in Canada but he would get paid for it. Well I got home at 5:00 am and went to bed really tired but in NSR. I am taking it very easy and not doing too much. I just want to get these next three months over with. Moy... Wow! I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that but it's good it's good to hear that you got back to NSR on your own.
For you it to be suggested that you be converted by electro-cardio version so quickly - is interesting. I'm not sure why they would do this in such a manner. How high was your HR etc? Maybe we should plan our July Fourth 2012 Extravaganza Party up in Canada vs. Boston. A friend once told me that you could get Xanax and Loraxapam over the counter up there. Is this still true? - Thomas

Moy,
I"m SO sorry to hear you had this problem. Wow. I think you need to contact your EP asap. Not what you want to have after an ablation. You want to be in NSR all the time. So great you avoided the shock treatment. You certainly don't want to spend any more time in the hospital. That was the whole point of the ablation to say goodbye to your hospital stays. I think you scared the a fib right out of your system!! It left before it was going to be shocked into leaving!! HOpe that is the last of it for you!

Hi Moy,
So sorry that you went to afib again after your ablation. Hopefully, this was the last time that Mr. afib visited you, really. I am glad that the episode had a happy ending and Mr. afib left by himself without the doctor kicking his butt, LOL. I am just curious if the doctors in the hospital gave you any rate control pill. If not, why not? Also, I really like your heading for your post :-) For sure, it got my attention right away :-) I am glad everything went well at the end. Please keep away from that afib guy! :-) Take care, Scott

Thomas,
My heart rate was bouncing between 73 and 133 but the doc said he could see that it was trying to convert on its own. Not quite sure why you would say that to be electro-cardioverted so quickly is interesting. I had phoned my EP's office that day and was advised to go to Emerg if I stayed in Afib for a long time. As Sanibel said in her post the EP does not count Afib attacks too significant in the first three months and it was just one month since I had it done.

Well, I am hardly an expert but I do find it "interesting" for sure. Especially that you were "asked" if you wanted to be cardio-converted? It is my understanding that this is a protocol that is used as a next to last resort in most cases. Unless there is/are some incriminating issues/factors that might warrant a more radical/immediate approach. Quite, frankly sitting around waiting for 14 plus hours, totally stressed out with IVs, shots in the stomach, HR up and down all the time thinking that you're 'gonna die, one would think that why hasn't anyone suggested using an electro-cardio conversion? There has to be a reason. This scenario has happened to be an several occasions. I really hope I'm never in an ER or admitted in a hospital situation again because of AF - ever. May be wishful thinking but it's really not fun at all. All the best to all of us!! ;) - Thomas BTW: Is it true actually about some over the counter meds. in Canada or is this an Urban Legend. Re: Xanax, etc. THX.

Thomas,
Not sure about the OVC drugs in Canada. I will ask my pharmacist next time I am in there. Moy...

Petey,
I wish I had so much control over such things. I not so sure about a talent as just downright luck. Moy...
