asthma and upper respitory infections:

Today I went to the dr. because I was having trouble breathing. The dr. said that I have another upper respitory infection. This time is worse than before. He has put me on Mucinex-DM and I have to use my rescue inhaler every 4 to 6 hrs. If that doesn't do the trick, then he is gonna put me on a nebulizer. Has anyone had this problem with upper respitory infections.

I know I have. I think that we asthmattics are more susceptible to URI's and of course that causes our asthma to flare. It can be a viscious cycle.

Hi, I went to emergency hospital last Saturday morning and was put on the nebulizer for the first time in my life. I was using my relief inhaler every hour to breath and it wasn't helping.
I also have a upper respiratory infection too, I was prescribed antibiotics which has cured the infection now but boy I have so much phlegm in my left side of my chest! I am on Prednisone and Mucinex DM. This is the worse congestion I have ever had. And having asthma really sucks. As long as you are not running a low grade or high grade temperature it's a good thing. I have an awful feeling that this is going to take a lot of time to get over! Take care...keep in touch .... and I hope you feel better too!

Respiratory infections are one of my bigger triggers. I have always been prone to them, at least since I was about 7 y.o. I had to have a Trach then and have been battling resp probs ever since.

Yuppers, ben there done that and am doing it now. I have had upper respiratory infections since I was a child. I was dx for asthma three years ago but I know I had it long before that. I have been on tons of antibiotics and medications for years for that stuff. Luckily for right now, I am on my inhaler and Mucinex DM which seems to be breaking up the congestion. I am sure I am on the verge of bronchitis. Last year I had pneumonia 6 times and was not able to fight off streptococcus aureus. Luckily, no pneumonia since March 2009. I so know what you are talking about and going through. As thp636 said, 'It can be a viscious cycle'. Take care and rest and I hope you get better soon.

LOL, yes, every time I get sick. :) The rescue inhailer is just that, for emergencies. You should be on the nebulizer when you get sick. I had them write me a presciption for at home treatments, for when I need it. If you over use the rescue, it may not work when you need it. Are you going to a primary care or a pulmonologist? The machine, they send it to you that day.

Has anyone asked their physicians about Octagam
infusions. This is a blood product that boosts the immune system. It is given to a lot of cancer and Cystic Fibrosis sufferers as well as asthmatics I have had them for the last five years on a monthly basis and my rate of infection has dropped off a lot.It is worth asking about.

SMoritz - Be thankful you're in a country with free univeral healthcare. Here in the US, where the cost would be prohibitve and not covered by insurance, which would then not cover these people anymore, we prefer the Victorian Dickens System where in people should die quickly and reduce the surplus population rather than spend money on them.
