I have to have some tests done, one is a lung-function test and the other one is called a 'bronchial challence with 4.5% Saline' That's the one I'm anxious about, does anyone know about that test? I am so worried because it has to be done at a hospital, why? is there a risk involved?
I have this breathing obsession and I am ready to cancel that appointment. Help, I'm scared....

" I think you're referring to a bronchial challenge test. The best thing you can do is call your doctor, or "google" for more information.

" Thank you Sabrina, when I rang for my appointment the lady put my mind at ease when I told her my concerns, she explained what it was all about so I'm ok with it now. Joanne "

" Hello Jessibrown, I haven't had the test yet but apperently you have to breathe in a mist through a mask, they add a saline solution and then you do a breathing test to see if that restricts your breathing, it takes about half an hour and when I asked if there was a risk she said only very minimal. What sort of tests did you have done to determine that you had Asthma? If my problem is Asthma it could possibly be anxiety induced as I have suffered from that for many years but I am working on that and getting much better, also I have not been taking the Ventolin as I feel I don't need that at all, I have been doing a lot more walking, even doing some hills and hardly getting out of breath. Have you found anything interesting in your research? let me know as I also want to know as much as possible about it. Thanks for your interest. Joanne x "

" I had a methacholine challenge test to confirm my asthma. It was given on an out patient basis in a controlled environmen at the hospital t .First you do a PFT test to get a base. Then you were given several rounds of inhaled methacholine and then a PFT test after each round. If your PFT dropped 20% or more then the test was ended and you were considered positive for asthma.
Then you were given inhaled medication to counteract the methacholine and your PF was tested again.
Good luck,
Tom "

" Hey Joanne,

Thank you so much for the information. Found it really interesting. I came to know about my asthma one year back and they did pulmonary function test for me. This is a test, done at doctor's office, which measures how well your breathing passages can move air in and out. The test is done by blowing forcefully into a mouthpiece that is connected to a computer. The computer measures the air moving through the mouthpiece and will show whether your breathing is normal for your age and height. Since I went through this test I want to know more about any tests apart from this which has been practiced by doctors.

In my recent research I came across a test called exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) test which is quiet interesting. This test is used to monitor the asthma level in patients. wanna know about it? "

" Hi jessiebrow, yes I would like to know about that test as well, I already had that other one done in the doctors office. I do a lot of research too, I was just reading about a device called 'superlung', it's supposed to strengthen your breathing muscles, have you heard of it? it's not cheap but if it works I don't care. I already do a lot of deep breathing, I actually bought a clarinet and I practice it everyday, that certainly forces you to do deep breathing, I still get a lot of sqeaks out of it but who cares, I am not planning to go on stage, I just play at home and make sure I have all the doors and window closed, ha ha. Hope to hear from you soon. Joanne. "

" Hey Joanne,

Exhaled nitric oxide test is a simple test to measure the amount of nitric oxide in your lungs. Nitric oxide is one of the many gases people exhale. It is a marker of airway inflammation. The results from this test make it easier for our doctor to monitor our asthma and find the best treatment plan for us. I came across a device called 'Insight eNO system' which measures patient’s degree of airway inflammation.Based on the exhaled nitric oxide levels doctors can tune their medication accordingly. Check this link.
