Singulair

My daughter (16) has been asthmatic since she was 4 years old.
We have had our share of hospital stays, close calls and sleepless nights. 2 years ago, she was put on Singulair. What a difference it has made. She has since come off of all other meds and only uses her inhailer/nebulizer a handfull of times per year. Her bad season is fall. About 6 weeks ago, she ran out of meds and just never got it refilled. Said she wanted to take a break from them and see what happened. Lo and behold, she slowly reverted back to her prior symptoms. So last week she started back up on them again. What I have noticed is, her attitude has completely changed. She is moody and cranky since going back on the Singulair. Which got me to thinking that "YA, over the past few weeks she has been extra pleasant to be around". Prior to this revelation I just chalked her attitude up to normal teenage mood swings and angst. But now I think its from the Singulair! I know that Singulair does have contraindications in this respect. So now I am thinking we should try her on something different. My question to you all is, what do you use and how has it affected you? Any suggestions on other similar medications that you like? BTW...she almost died from Advair. She had an adverse reaction to the medication. It put her in the emergency room after only the second dose! She couldn't breathe. Her blood pressure was sky high and she was delirious. She was admitted for two days because of this. Posted on 08/03/09, 01:08 pm |

I have heard that singulair causes moodiness. It seems to be the go to meds though. I'm not aware of any one med that does the same thing. I guess the best thing to do is talk to her doctor to see if there is anything else she can take. Since the singulair worked so well...it might be best to just have a grumpy teen around :(

I take Singulair and it has stopped by lung congestion which was very bad before I took it.
So yes it works very well. As for side effects -Yes there are some and we have to be aware of them. For me the following are true Physical - 1. Small headaches occasionally 2. A coating on my tongue and a dryness in my mouth.I take water to bed with me every night that I can sip when I need it. 3. Excessive sweating -particuarly around the head and neck. Psychological/Mental 1.Very vivid dreams that are usually a bit confusing - but I can usually cope with those now 2. There is a change in mood sometimes - it may have disinhibiting effects - I find myself unable to stop talking sometimes in company when normally I would have stopped and generally not always being self aware So it is a question of whether the benefits of improved breathiong and airways outweigh the side effects.I think that on balance they do - but I am wary of it

Could look into using the herb Butterbar which this drug is made from. Would have to get on the Web as it's not available in health food stores.

Like you with a side effect. I gained a few pounds on singulair but have since started back on. If meaning that I feel great on it compared to the few pounds, I will take the few pounds for now.

We decided to try taking it every 3 days. If it keeps her clear then we will try every 4 days and keep going longer between pills until she starts to get stuffy again.
It works so well on her that is why she is reluctant to try anything else. So we compromised and agreed to try this intermittent dosing. Will let you know how it goes.

I have been on singulair for just over a year now, started on it when I was 16 years old. I have heard of the mood swings and have also heard that it can cause ear infections but have not noticed any problems.
I tried the advair to see if it worked better than the meds I was on and after 1 dose I went back to the ones I am on now, Singulair and Symbicort, because I started having symptoms during school and had to use my inhaler.

I have been on Singulair for years. I never really had any problems with it. I know when I run out of it, because my symptoms usually get a lot worse, which isn't saying much I guess. I guess this probably didn't help much but that 's my experience with it.
