Insomnia

I've had severe insomnia lasting months, but the last few weeks especially I've had great difficulty sleeping, both falling asleep and staying asleep. I'm about to start with 3 mg of melatonin, but friends and family tell me adamantly to take between 1-6 mg and I'm not sure. I know I need to talk to my doctor before trying it but I am so desperate for sleep. I will talk to her this week, but wondering here if there has been any experience with using melatonin. Thanks so much.

" Could be a side effect of some of your medications. Try taking a warm bath before bed and doing some visualization exercises...should help your body and mind relax. "

" Still sleepless. Melatonin helps me fall asleep but gives me vivid dreams and I am waking every hour. I have an appointment on Monday and I'm guessing she'll be taking out her prescription pad. I'll tried everything I know....tea, turning the clock around, warm baths, I remain sleepy and extremely wanting for sleep. I'll let you know what happens....in the meantime, thanks for your comments. "

" Could try an herbal pill with Valerian root and chamoille. GNC has many options. Celestial Seasons also makes a "Sleepy Time" tea you can get in any store which also works well.

This being said, can't say anything will work during 4th of July fireworks :-) "

" Hey JurseyGirl...I have tried the Celestrial Seasonings 'Sleepy Time" tea...chamomile too. Haven't tried Valerian Root. I'm thinking I prefer a sledge hammer to knock me out...but short of that, I think it is another pharmaceutical. I swear, I've tried many other things. I'm thinking if I can get one or two really good nights of sleep, then maybe that would help getting through the week. I'll settle for a 5 hour night in fact. I'll settle for anything. It is bad not to be able to fall asleep, but not being able to stay asleep is worse. I never get that restorative level of sleep and that's what is killing me. Even my plantar fasciitis is in an uproar. This can't be good for asthma either! "
