Anyone here have asthma and allergies to pets, and have one of those hypoallergenic types? What kind? What level of asthma do you have? I miss having a pet! And no one one here suggest a fish, okay? :-) Haha.

" Rona,
what part of the animal are you allergic too?
Is it the fur or the dander or the scent?

Dander can be washed away if you are able to wash the animal regularly.
Some people say dogs that have hair but not fur are better for asthmatics.

For me, with dogs, I'm allergic to the scent they put off that makes them smell like a normal dog.

I have cats and I sometimes give them a bath and I brush their fur and then toss it so there is less in the house.

The other thing I found to be very important in controlling my asthma is vacuuming. If the carpet isn't vacuumed often enough, it really bothers my breathing.

Are you allergic to both cats and dogs?

Someone told me to get a hairless cat. I don't want a hairless cat. LOL "

This is some interesting info on the Portugese water dog and it says it's hypo-allergenic.

I hope this helps. "

" I don't know I'm allergic to dogs, but I'm allergic to cats and many other things, too, so I will talk to my allergist about dog allergy and what she thinks of this. I'm certain I'm sensitive to dander and scent. Even human body odor cuts off my air supply. So, currently, I live alone and have no pets. This really isn't fun on many, many levels.

I was thinking of a smaller dog with less need to exercise. I live in a tiny apartment and work long hours. Sounds like I need a cat but not willing to go the hairless route either! Just thinking of various ways to trick my respiratory system into letting me bond with a pet. "

" Hi Rona,
I react to human body odor too.
I also don't do well with perfumes and products with scents.

I hope you can find a pet that works for you.

I live alone too.
I think I'd go nuts without my 2 kitties.

I sure understand. "

" Don't fall for those breeders that sell poodle mixes, claiming they are hypoallergenic. There's probably a 50/50 chance the dog will be hypoallergenic since it's not a purebred poodle. The puppy could have the other dog's traits, such as shedding fur with lots of undercoat. IMO, (fill in blank)poo breeders that make these claims are dishonest. "

" I know some claim certain dog breeds and cats are hypoallergenic but it's simply not true. I wish it was though. I found out about a year ago that I'm allergic to cats..........I have eight of them!!!! Talk about a shock! It's their dander I'm allergic to. Basically I'm allergic to cat saliva. At least I'm not allergic to my dogs.
I'm miserable a lot of the time with asthma and it's the triggers that are the worst. "

" I am allergic to fur and feather and the dander of animals, I was miserable for a number of years because I refused to get rid of my animals, however now we have two standard poodles, and I am not allergic to them, they have hair, not fur. I would not touch the poodle crosses though. "
