Advice:
What is this shortness of breath?

I woke up this morning feeling short of breath and extremely fatigued. Granted, I did not get quite enough sleep last night (probably 6.5 hours), but this usually doesn't affect me this way.

I don't think I'm having an asthma attack -- I'm not wheezing any more than usual, and I don't have any pain. My asthma is fairly well-controlled and my peak-flow was 500. I'm on Symbicort 160 2Xday, Singulair, Flonase 2Xday, and Zyrtec. On doctor's instructions, I routinely take a dose of Albuterol before my daily walk. Had to cut the walk short today, though, and slowed down because I worried I wouldn't make it back.

It feels like I want to hyperventilate -- like whatever I'm breathing is not air. Any ideas?

" Okay, I just read in your profile that you are enemies with the grass (like I am) and I was wondering if you did your "check list" during grass season.

1) Where the house windows left open during the day? Maybe the neighbours mowed the lawn, and there was invisible pollen on your pillow case.

2) Did your husband mow the lawn and forget to wash his hair before you went to bed?

3) For that matter, did you wash your hair before you went to bed?

4) Do you sleep with the windows open at night?

This is all important, because when you sleep your breathing is shallow, and you are in the horizontal position, which means that pollen creeps into your lungs, and while you sleep, you cannot react with sprays. There might have not been enough pollen to cause a Code Red alarm for your immune system, but just enough to tickle your lungs. "

" Thanks, Weissdorn. I live in Southern California, and the air has been kind of "thick" lately -- in the yellow zone, which is not the best, but also not normally an alert day for asthma sufferers. This could be it, or it could be the grasses, but since I don't sleep with my windows open and nobody has done any gardening/mowing lately, I don't know how I can protect myself more. I even have an air-purifier (with newish filters) in my bedroom.
I'm wondering if the feeling of fatigue/breathlessness could be caused by the medications? Again, I'm still getting a peak-flow of 500, but I still feel that I'm not getting enough air. The last time I felt this way I was beginning to recover from acute bronchitis -- I went to Urgent Care and they prescribed an anti-anxiety pill (xanax). The feeling is that if I don't consciously breathe, I'll stop. It's also possible I have sleep apnea, although why I should suddenly feel this way is a mystery (I was doing so well! humph!) "

" Shortness of breath can occur for many reasons. It is closly associated with asthma but can also be signs of hyperventilating.

However with SOB associated with asthma it is because you cannot get enough air in. this is difficult to remedy without the use of an inhlaer often. But it can be sometimes if not too severe. You need to try and take control of your breathing and breath in a correct pattern as often we can start breathing dysfunctioanlly and cause an imbalance in the chemicals we need mainkly co2 and o2.

As you are allergy linked the SOV may be caused by an allergen in which case you may want to make sure you have elimated all allergens from the house and where you soend alot of time. You may also need to see a dr and get some anti allergy meds.

You may be allerguc to somethign in your bedding or may have bugs in your bedding such a s dust mites. It maybe an idea to get this checked or anti allergy you bed!!

Hope this helps

" Yup, used to experience this all the time when I lived in London (Ontario, Canada). It has the 3rd worse air in all of Canada...pollution that comes up from Cleveland sits in London as London is in a valley...like a soup bowl. Since moving from there and to the water where some of the best air in Ontario is, I have not experienced that feelling since. "

" Jealous! I come from Northern California where the air's not quite so bad, but we just bought a house down here because this is where our jobs are.

I just went to my GP and he said my breathing, 02-levels and blood pressure were fine-- drew blood for complete bloodwork this morning. He also mentioned that some people were more sensitive to smog than others. I never used to notice this before -- there's probably some anxiety involved, just seeing the brownish grey air, since my exacerbation. I don't know what I'm going to do when fire season starts. "
