Advice:
White water rafting with asthma??

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I did look through the forum but couldnt find the topic. Im holidaying in the NationalParks of USA in Sept with friends who want to try out some whitewater rafting. Im not at all sporty so just wondering if its something asthmatics can do or should avoid...some rafting websites say to avoid it completely while others just say to bring medication and tell your guide. Im seeing my asthma Dr in a few weeks but just wondering if anyone here knew offhand. I have significant asthma which has gotten quite worse recently, currently Im taking up to 12 puffs of symbicort a day plus Singulair at night. Thanks for any light anyone can shine on my query!

" That's a toughie. Even if you are on one of the large rafts and the guide sees to the all the rowing, you still have the problem of being far from help in the event of an emergency.
I'm sure there have been many people with health issues that have done this and it sounds like a lot of fun...but there are risks.
I hope you can work it out.
Tom "

" Thanks Tom! Good point about the distance from help actually. Plus I dont want to ruin anyone else's experience with any asthma drama's!! Hard to know what to do but Im sure I'll figure it out, consultant might have an official line on things anyway.
Thanks,
Aoife "

" Hey guys just thought I should give an update on this in case anyone out there is considering WWR also. Im just back from my holiday and not only was the white water rafting no problem, (my consultant said it would be absolutely fine so long as I informed the raft guide) but I completely suprised myself and my friends in being able to hike all over (up and down) the National Parks just as well as they could. I had an amazing trip and am delighted I didnt say no to anything based on my asthma because with a little forward planning and taking the breaks I needed to, I was well fit to do any activity we tried. So I have now realised that I have no excuse about inactivity now that Im back home! "

" Aoife, that's GREAT! I'm so glad you had fun here in the good ol' USA. You've encouraged me to get off my duff and exercise. I've got about 25 lbs to lose. Thanks and I'm so glad you had a fun holiday! "

" I went white water rafting and had a blast. Use your ventolin 30 minutes before going. This will help. Have a blast too! "
