I have been in a dreadful tumbling phase but I have been wanting to address this to clarify something of import. Adult Aspergians did not get help in childhood, our tool boxes left empty we had to craft our own. I do not think it is a normal of Aspergers but rather being left as were that causes self cutting which I now concretely believe is a harmful form of stimming ( the need to externalize internal pressures! ) I am glad to say I have only done it once as of recent my first ex was being erratic due to his gambling which put undue strain on me, there is an upside to a down side, this gave me a required epiphany in regard to this. That which we understand we are better able to find better solutions for!

" Right on.

A huge number of us, it seems, have to develop our own understanding too.

AS is such an enigma, I've begun to develop my own personal philosophy toward it. Not worth getting into here as I believe how I have finally come to think of it would cause too much controversy.

Not worth getting into, because it's only how I think of it now, in this moment, and is likely to change as I learn more.

Not worth "defending" because I can't yet, if ever.

But my outlook "works" for now, and helps me get through things that in the past have done nothing more than trip me up and lead to self destructive behaviors.

In the end:

"Whatever works....

for now." "

" For me it is having a name, a context it gives me a frame work that I did not have before, a verbal Aspergian rendered mute as to my own self for so long!! Indeed personal revelations, epinanies are an ongoing process and will continue to be. "

" I think I know what you mean.

For me it is a context that others can [hopefully] understand and identify with. Although I have lately developed my own perspective on it. More like theories really. Not scientifically based. More based on personal intuition. Wouldn't do much good to put the ideas out there, because they are so far off the "accepted" understandings of AS.

The only thing I am sure of is that the accepted description of AS fits perfectly. That alone opens the door to mutual understanding, at least with some professionals and others with AS.

It provides a common ground from which we can construct useful conversations, even if I don't happen to agree with the most widely accepted definitions of what AS really is. Arguing that point only clouds the real issue.

The real issue is that we just want to function among others, and open conversation eventually can help us learn to cope.

Whether AS truly IS a disorder, whether or not it really has anything at all to do with Autism, or is just one of the many personality types all normal human beings have, is a different discussion, and often so contentious it distracts from the "How do we get along with the rest of the world" question. " that's actually funny, not really, but something that makes me go. hmmmm. I'm seeing a psychiatrist, i guess that's what he is, now. in the uptake or intake or whatever it's called, i told them i cut, so like everyone is really interested in why. I'm like if I knew why, i probably wouldn't do it, anyhow, the easy answer is "Oh yeah, it's a release," which is really the status quo of excuses for it, but it IS for me, not a release, but an effort to show physically how i feel inside. it is a roadsign. if you see me bleeding, you know i am hurting, because you wouldnt know otherwise. emotions are easy to hide. easy to hide because when i show them, jaws drop.

kind of "Jeremy spoke in class today" syndrome. not a big pearl jam fan, but the song speaks volumes.

hope u swing the other way soon, pandora :) i hate tumbling "

" Indeed and I meant you Sig!! :P Yeah to make this generic is another ill fated mistake, for me AS IS autism just not in a way others grasp it! I get "lost" inside of myself a lot like I do NOT have the key ( but I must with out realizing it or how to use it! ) there is an invisible box, I have been in here since I was 3 or 4 years old! The myriad ways this can manifest, the way most people ( doctotrs included ) like a One Size Fits All problem to deal with this is of concern to me, whatever we opt to agee or disagrree when it comes to this it is no One Size Fits all condition! " Oh Sig it does not make it an excuse, it is a CHALLENGE!! Anyway as a child I would melt like a crayon on a hot stove, so INTENSE I slammed my head on the floor, up against a wall, this locked away PAIN in the guise of rage!! :( Hence I am certain this of which I wrote is a form of harmful stimming. " It sounds like a child creating a physical pain in order to distract themselves from the non-physical pain. Or it could be physically enacting the emotional pain you felt. So sure, it's all about externalizing internal pain. "

" Then hopefully Sig we all grow up, I am trying , I know you are too!! I met a doctor ( this regarding vertigo and a bad fall to the head for which I did not get stitches I just had an open gash covered by my shaggy hair for 5 weeks) now its a concern but avoidance is a big thing especially when I feel disconcerted, adrift! Anyway I WROTE my various physical problems down ,as well as a plea for some direction to turn for a helping hand. He wants me to see a specialist for the vertigo ( going on 2 months with it now!! ) as well as head trauma but I am out here all on my own in a BIG strange place. I openly described ( naked Aspergian here!! ) what it is like for me, he got a thoughtful expression and said that sounds like actual autism as opposed to Aspergers! I said for me it is BOTH, thus my terminolgy of Austitic Aspergers, he said he wants me to get better, my health to improve I have much to do in offering enlightment from my unique perspective, my articulate words.
