Discussion:
Is OCD often co-morbid with aspergers?

I got an obsessive-compulsive disorder diagnosis from a psychiatrist, however, now he's starting to wonder if I have aspergers or borderline aspergers. Are obsessive compulsive symptoms a trait of aspergers? Are the two conditions often co-morbid with one another? I'm very confused and am wondering if I'll still have obsessive-compulsive problems if my diagnosis changes to aspergers.

I'm not a cleaner or a hoarder. Well, I used to hoard but I realized I had been hoarding so I stopped. I feel compelled to clean often but I leave cleaning to once a week so I don't worry or obsess over it. One thing I do have a problem with is my stuffed animals arrangements. I have to brush and dust them every day, and play with them in a specific spot. If anyone even knocks one over or plays too roughly with it to the point I feel it'll be damaged, it can send me in to a panic attack because I'll get so upset about it. I also tend to obsess over people who I find fascinating and it drives people crazy and they wonder if I have a crush on the person (that isn't the case, I just find the person fascinating is all).

Thanks in advance if anyone replies to this. I'm new to this forum. My name is Jessica, nice to meet you all!

" My grandaughter has asp, and some OCD traits. She has to have things a certain way & done the same way each time. She is I would say a hoarder. She never wants to get rid of anything. i.e. I have asked what this blank piece of paper is & tried to throw it away & she said no, I'm keeping it, a kid in my 2nd grade class gave that to me (she's 16 now!) Stuff like that. "

" It would seem so. At one time, lacking the knowledge of Asperger's I thought OCD was the closest tag I could put on myself but the diagnostic criteria didn't really fit.

I've always had a tendency to cycle through a variety of interests. As I've gotten older they seem more and more to connect and complement each other. I think also that generalized anxiety causes us to try to grab hold of something, anything that can give a sense of constancy, continuity, and focus, even if just for a while. Also generalized anxiety can cause us to seek to identify "what is wrong", and lead to manifestations of lots of different symptomologies...seeming at times to be manic-depressive, ocd, ADHD, to manifest turettes-like vehement reactions or even apparent psychotic rage. The mind squirms under a constant sense of "wrongness" and tries to find its equilibrium in whatever manner it can. "

" hi jessica; well i have read that aspergers disorder patients are likely to suffer from anxiety disorders like ocd ...... myself i am an aspie and have been diagnosed of ocd..

the good thing is that ocd is often very successfully treated with prozac.. thats what happened with me.. now i never have obsessions..
depression is much harder to treat , atleast in my case.. occasionally i have brief "panic attacks " as well , but they are very mild

hope this helps... "

" I've never tried prozac. I've taken zoloft before for OCD though it gave me insomnia (it did help with a lot of anxiety and obsessions though). I also tried taking Now I take trazodone (an anti-depressant that helps you sleep) and buspar. I also have klonopin but I don't take that regularly, only if I'm having extreme anxiety or am having a panic attack. The medication combination I'm on seems to be helping so far, though I'll keep prozac in mind if I have to switch medications. "

" Oops haha I posted before I finished a sentence. I also tried taking lexapro, though that made anxiety and panic attacks worse and more frequent. "
