" She is 16. Do I have to wait until she's 18? I am terrified of what will happen to her financially when she is 18 because I cannot support her anymore. I don't even know if she will be able to get a job! Did you go thru an attorney & how long did it take & what was the process? What proof did you need, just a drs. diagnosis? My daughter (35) could not get SSI and she has hiv & hep C & mental problems!! "

" I am on Social Security disability and I have Asperger's Syndrome. I am 26, though. It didn't take me long to get on Social Security. You could probably check the Social Security office close to you. Good Luck. Dawn "

" Does the child have to be interviewed if they are underage?

What kind of questions are asked?

If my grandaughter knew this is called "disability" she would have a fit even if she could get free money!

May I ask how much you all are getting per month? Is it enough for them to live on their own when they are over 18? "

" It's not simply "free" money if you get it and do not NEED it. You're selling your soul for it. If one needs it, fine, but if you're looking for free money....

Me? I sold my soul years ago. I'm getting the so-called free money in an effort to add to the total bankrupcy of this governmentally run economic system. "

" Hi SigS, sounds like I offended you. Didn't mean to. It's not for me, it's for my aspie grandaughter. Maybe you didn't read my entire posting. By free I meant she doesn't work to get it. She will not want to be labeled "disabled" (social security "disability") although she is. If I had asp I would kiss the ground with gratitude to get "free" money & not have to struggle with getting & keeping a job.

How much do you get per month? I just wonder if she could support herself with it. "

" I have Asperger's and I am on Social Security Disability. I get a little over $600 a month in Social Security. I have been on my own for almost 6 years now and I am doing pretty well. $600 a month isn't much after I pay my rent, buy groceries, buy things that I need, pay my bills, get my meds, get laundry money etc. I am going to be moving soo to a low income building for people that are elderly and handicapped and I will be saving my money better. I am emotionally a teenager, but I am still able to live independently. If you would like to add me as a friend you can. I hope everything turns out for you. huggggggssss. Dawn "

" I did take my gd with me when I went to the office. She didn't have to go but i wanted them to met her. She was a live wire too. They just asked regular question like dr; hospitals things like that DX I had some paper work on the hospital and things like that with me. it was about 30 min. of time that is all
My gd is 7 with high function aspergers, She knows she has problems but from the soical side of it I have no idea if she see it as a disablility. She get between 500 and 550 a month. I doubt if that is enough to live on her own with but I know people who do. And that is SAD. "
