Hi everyone...
As some of you know, I have a daughter with AS and now, a newly diagnosed son with PDD-NOS. Can anyone tell me about this Medicare waiver program I keep hearing about? There was just a meeting about it a couple of weeks ago at our high school for parents of kids on the spectrum but we did not attend that meeting. We might be going to another one soon that may be able to help us out but I wanted to know if any of you know anything about it. Also, do I have it wrong..is is Medicaid? I don't know anything about all of this. As you can see, I'm quite dumb! :) Please help out if you can. What will this do for our family if I get my kids on this? Will it help pay for their therapies? Also, will it make them uninsurable by private insurance companies?
Thank you so much for your responses.

" It's the Medicaid waiver. In La. there is a waiting list . My son who has Down Syndrome was on the list for 6 years before he got services. He has medicaid, which pays for any meds, doctors, dentist, and if he went to therapy it probably would pay for that, too.
The rules for each state may be different. He also qualifies for a PCA (personal care attendant),and when he moves out into an apartment when he is older, he will have 24 hr caretakers.
I don't know which agency for you to contact in your state. I went through our Office for Citizens with Disabilities. "

" If I were you I would ask whether there is an autism subsidy available for the kids through your school or local community mental health center. In MI it pays $222/mo towards things NOT covered by Medicaid or Medicare, like respite care and austism-specific treatment like ABA therapy. But the Medicaid waiver is useful too, obviously. "

" Cliff,
I wouldn't even know where to begin asking about the subsidy but it sounds interesting. You say I should check with my daughter's elementary school? As far as the local mental health facility...I don't know where it is or what the name of it would be. Would I look under mental health in the phone book or local govt. offices? As you can see I am clueless...but, very interested in knowledge! Thank you for your help in advance! "

" I have been unable to get healthcare because Autism is on the list. At this point if I had a problem I would rather go to Cuba for any type of care. So yes I a healthy, fit, 18yo make can not get healthcare because a doctor once called me Autistic. If there was a public plan like in a place as nice as Cuba I could get care for things like therapist. I wish I lived in a place like Cuba or Canada. "

" Hi mehimandkids, I am really glad that you found the info. that you were looking for. :) To find the local mental health agency in your area, you would just look under mental health. There should be a local mental health agency in your County. I am a 26 year old femal with Asperger's Syndrome. I have medicare and medicaid and I have had my own apartment since December of 2003. Honestly, why would someone with Asperger's need 24 hour care? I'm just curious. I am really independent and I take care of myself. Thanks. Dawn "
