Twins and Asperger's

Here is an exerpt that I found at the National Library of Medicine website from a paper that was written on genetics and autism:
"Twin studies reported 60% concordance for classic autism in monozygotic (MZ) twins versus 0 in dizygotic (DZ) twins, the higher MZ concordance attesting to genetic inheritance as the predominant causative agent. Reevaluation for a broader autistic phenotype that included communication and social disorders increased concordance remarkably from 60% to 92% in MZ twins and from 0% to 10% in DZ pairs. This suggests that interactions between multiple genes cause "idiopathic" autism but that epigenetic factors and exposure to environmental modifiers may contribute to variable expression of autism-related traits." My son is an MZ twin who is a surviving identical twin. Can anyone relate? Does anyone have opinion on "idiopathic" autism? My theory is that when the egg splits, it's not split exactly even. I don't believe that exactly 50% of everything goes to the other half of the egg. I believe there is more of an uneven split, meaning more of this goes to this half and less of that go to that egg. If I had both my twins, perhaps I would have a different theory. Does anyone else have autistic identical twins? Posted on 04/07/07, 04:04 pm |

I am an identical twin. I've just discovered AS, I'm pretty sure I have it, and I need to get diagnosed. I also believe I have Tourette's Syndrome. I've talked with my twin about these things. She also believes she has Tourette's, but hasn't expressed any inclination that she also has AS, and I feel that she either doesn't have it or has a much lesser degree if she does. I tend to agree that the egg does not split exactly in half. My twin and I have many similarities, but also many differences.

A friend of the family has identical twins and both are AS.

If it were just genetic, everyone with the gene would have it, and there would be 100% equal incidence in genetically identical individuals. I feel there is more to it.

Sometimes AS people can exhibit symptoms of Tourette's, Syndrome. Correct me if I'm wrong, but some Aspies have ticks and stims. I know I have a little of both. Sometimes when people that I don't really know lean into my personal space a little too much, I instantaneously get the impulse in my arm to push them away or slap them, but it's never been any more than that, and I know that I wouldn't do that. I pretty much try to be a normal guy. rofl.

I don't, but I have a sister very close in age and we're both in the same boat, she more intensely than I.

Okay - I realize that this is 2 years later, but I am totally wowed by what you've written as I read tonight. Today at preschool, the teachers of my almost 3 year old identical twin boys let on that at a meeting next week with the autism coordinator of our school district we may find out that as of now our boys are able to be diagnosed somewhere on the spectrum. From previous meetings, I'm making an assuption that it will be Asperger's.
My boys definitely have hyperlexia - they have been reading for months. One of them was spelling his name before he turned 2 and before he was speaking any words. They are writing. One wrote a complete sentence the other night while I had walked away. I came back to read on his paper: "CALEB LOVES TO PLAY TRAINS." They turn 3 in 3 weeks. So all day I'm doing research to be ready for this meeting, but it occured to me suddenly whether there was any connection to them being twins. Now I'm super curious. And yes, my twins are different and one of them is further along in his reading and the other seems to prefer writing his ABCs or his name over and over and over on paper, on magnadoodles, on the fireplace or anything he can get his hands on. Any more info on this since your post? Enjoyed reading your medical description too. Thanks!
