" That is good. It took me a few minutes to realize it was directed at anyone non-autistic dealing with an autistic anger episode.

I would caution that #28 can sometimes backfire big time. You really have to know the person very well before using that step.

I have one son that interprets that as a clear sign that he is now "complying" and has "lost" his bid to independently handle whatever the situation is.

With him, I never take it further than thanking him for making the situation easier for me to bear. That sends a message that he changed the situation for me, and doesn't address "compliance."

If you said "“That was the smart thing to do. I think you made a good choice”. to him, it could very likely blow up in your face, causing him to return to the very behavior you didn't want in the first place.

To him it means, "Good boy! You're doing what you're told!"

What he needs to hear is, "Hey, that's great and you did it on your own!" And it needs to be honest, or he won't believe it, and it blows up just the same. "
