How to get rid of acute leg pain.

For no apparent reason, I get these leg pains that are so severe, I have to resort to walking with two crutches and/or use a wheelchair to function. It's hard to describe the pain - it's almost like a really bad charlie horse that will NOT go away, no matter what I do. I've tried pain relief creams and massages to the area that's in pain, but nothing seems to work. Funny thing is the pain doesn't stay in the same spot - one hour its on the left side of the leg and the next day it's moved to the right. I have nodules under the skin that hurt too. I've been to my regular doctor, walk in clinics, and even the ER, but no doctor seems to know what to do with me - they've kinda given up on me and expect me to "live with the pain". I'm on Ultram for the pain, but when I take extra of that, I tend to sleep. Stronger pain meds won't allow me to function (i'm a school teacher and must be alert at my job). I just want to know what the pain is from and how to get rid of it - can anybody give me advice???

Sorry you are having this pain.
I also have leg pain, in right leg, but mine is from nerve damage, and the pain gets so intense and unbearable at times. This was all due to my fusion in 2005. Have you been to a neurologist at all? If not, I would try them as well. I hope you are able to get some relief soon!

Did any of the medical people suggest a neurologist or more testing? It is frustrating when all they can do is give you more pain pills. Have you had this for a long time?
Please have a better day tomorrow.

My wife had some similar problems with leg pains and ultimately got relief by getting physical therapy. This might be something you could ask your doctor to order for you. I would also suggest seeing a chiropractor. If any of your pain is coming from your back, they may be able to adjust you and relieve it. Things to try. .. .

I'm a teacher too and understand your frustration. I teach 2nd grade. I've had the pain like yours, and my doctor gave me neurontin (sp) and I take zanaflex, a muscle relaxer, at night. They help some. Moist heat seems to help the most though. I've spent the year on crutches, at times using a cane, and sitting a lot. Its pretty hard to teach 7 - 8 year olds sitting. People tell me to apply for disability, but I need my paycheck too much. The mortgage and bills have to be paid. I ended up missing some applying for the Family Medical Leave Act.
Your rheumatologist might could give you an injection. When I've had pains in elbows, shoulders, wrist or the past several years, my rheumatologist has given cortisone injections that helped. I wish you luck. Keep us updated.

I have the same problem and use painkillers and heat and excerise,
Excerise and making the leg stronger helps. Pt helps. I would get futher testing done, get a result why you are having these problems.
