*Background* I work in a customer service position at a large retail store. We are moving to a new store in the next few days.
I have been phased back into work after time off for diagnosis and treatment of my arthritis. Tomorrow is my first 8 hour shift, which I am already nervous about as usually my hips and knees develop unbearable pain after standing for a few hours. I just received a message on my answering machine telling (not asking) me that the day after tomorrow I would be working 8-5 helping to pack up and move the store. I'm pretty choked about this as I have not even tried standing for that long yet let alone doing physical labor. I do not want to be thrown back into the state I was when I stopped working in the first place. My rheumy doesn't even want me to exercise other than swimming or gentle yoga due to the fact that my joints hyper extend and he thinks this is what has triggered the arthritis in all my joints. I guess I need a push (because I am a big wuss) to tell them no. I don't want to push my joints like that for one days work (so they can save paying someone with a higher wage to do it). It is likely to put me in so much pain it will derail all the progress I have made in going back in the first place. What should I say? Am I being overly paranoid and this isn't a big deal? I freely admit my worst fear right now is being in the position I was in a few months ago, unable to do anything. Posted on 05/29/09, 09:05 pm |

This reminds me of when I was first dx with the RA and OA. I was working for a hospital, my doctor wrote what I was NOT suppose to do, and my supervisor got mad and threw the paper work across her desk and yelled " I don't know what to do with you". I would advise you to get a "note" from your doctor stating what you can and can't do. You must be careful tho, you could get fired for not being able to do your job. I wish you well, and good luck. sandy

Thanks Sandy. This didn't turn out to be a big deal at all. I got myself all nervous anticipating the worst case scenario because I hate having to say I "can't do something in the first place.
I don't think they could get mad at me for not doing my job because it isn't actually my job to move things. I used to work in a hospital and did home care as well and I do this now instead because it isn't as physically demanding. Thanks so much for responding to my wussy worry post!

Only you know what your limitations are and you need to listen to your body. I also understand the financial need so it is rough. Is there anything else that you can do?

Thanks for the reply ihart.
Well I was going to school to become a dental hygienist, but that's out of the question now as you must be able to work hunched over all day and hold your wrist up making intricate motions with it. I am now, and have my family on the job of, trying to think of a new career I can get into. It's a new way of choosing a career path by what I will physically be able to stand rather above all else. You are right about knowing my bodies limits. I think the fear of running myself into the ground again will keep my listening to my body rather than being afraid of inconveniencing someone. In that way my problems are helping me to grow as a person. In the past I tend to let people walk all over me (not that they may even mean to) and treat me like a little girl (I'm on the small side and people tend to think I am younger than I am) just to avoid making waves. I don't have that option anymore though. I'm not used to it though and that is why I get all nervous over things like this.

I had a migraine from I was 25 for 15 years. Then 45 I got a heart tack and six years later I got a stroke. I have got a lot of help from the patches Lifewave and I would like that others get my experience. I have now diabetes and am in overweight. I have also seen others get totally rid of their problems fx. back pain with LW. Take a look at:
