Hi all,
I have recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my right hand. Symptoms include: pain in middle finger (in particular), index finger, and thumb, stiffness, locking sensation, weakness in hand. At times I wake up in middle of the night because of the pain. The problem is very bad since I only have the use of my right hand, due to minor form of cerebral palsy. My neurologist prescribed Ultram. Since I just started using it, it is too soon to tell if it is helping. He is going to send me to a pain clinic. I am now waiting for the referral/approval from the HMO. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I should do while waiting for the appoval (exercises, etc.)?
Thanks,
Jef

" Hi and welcome to the group.
Excerising is good and will help.
Getting in to the pain clinic will help, with medications.
Look over the net at different types of medication and other treatments, so when you go to the pain clinic, you will know what they are talking about.
Good luck. "

" Jef,
Ultram is a good choice for many people. I hope it helps your pain. In the meantime, have you found either heat or ice to be helpful? Either one can be used, whichever makes it feel better. Also, gentle exercise tends to make arthritic joints feel better. You could use a soft ball in your hand to squeeze gently, or use your fingers to type or play the piano. You just don't want to exercise them so much that they hurt more. Immobilization is not a good idea. You want to keep the joints moving. Doing some handwriting may be a good exercise too. I hope it improves for you.

Vanyel "
