I have been diagnosed with severe arthritis in my rt hip and need a total hip replacement. I plan to have the surgery, but i need to save some sick days i cant afford to go on disability. i am overweight and had been doing this walking tape which seem to make the pain worse. Should iexercise and if yes what type.

Hi Oninia,
I have real bad arthritis in my left hip. I don't know what to tell you about exersize though. I just try to keep on going and doing the things I have to do like yard work and things around the house. That seems to at least keep it "loose" enough to do things. If the darned thing goes completely bone on bone I don't know what I am going to do. I sure can't afford to have a hip replacement. Joey

Keep away from exercises that expose the joint to pounding.Such as jumping and prolong compression through the joint. If you decide to walk maintain a walking pace of less than 3 miles per hour.Do not walk for more than 21 min. . Do not walk more than 3 times per week.Have a day of rest inbetween the exercise sessions. The golden rule is if the execise hurts do not do it.Healthy cartilage is like rubber. When it begins to degenerate it becomes very brittle. If you overwhelm the brittle tissue it will crack.Exercise is important to establish a vascular network, but it needs to be done in moderation. If you have any other questions contact me at 305-866-8384.Ask for Roman.
