I have pain behind my knee..in the back of my leg. My doctor says itīs arthritis..and I get recommendations from friends and some of you here to excercise that knee.
I am just wondering as I have less pain and swelling when I manage to stay off my knee and use my heating pad. Even the swelling seems to be less after this. Shouldnīt this tell me something? Or am I totally wrong here? Appreciate any thoughts you have.. Posted on 03/14/09, 07:03 pm |

Heat is good for arthris and it does help to do simple excerises and kept the knee moving instead of not using at all.
I have found with me that doing simple excerise does help and it's less stiff and that during a flare up.

Hoppet,
If your problem is just arthritis, exercise is good for it. If there is something else going on, some inflammatory process or infection or acute injury, rest may be more beneficial for a short time. If exercise is making it worse, then you should back off for a little bit and try again when it feels better. If you have not had the joint evaluated by an orthopedic doctor, that might be a good idea, to make sure there is nothing else going on besides arthritis. Overall, exercise is very good for arthritis and helps to maintain joint function and keep pain levels down. Hope that helps. Vanyel

I wish that I could spell excercise anyway!!! :)
Thank you for your replies! I think that I get the picture. I should probably do less than I do..or do it more gently probably. I should get my knee checked out, Vanyel, more thoroughly..but right now I canīt face going to another doctor as well. I have had some blood tests taken by my own doctor..maybe they will tell me and my doctor something as well. If there is an inflammation going on..it should show up in the blood tests, I would think?? Thank you again...

Hoppett,
It may or may not show up in bloodwork. Depends what tests he ordered, and what your body is up to. The bloodwork for arthritis really isn't all that helpful because you can still have major problems and all negative bloodwork. I think what you probably need is an MRI of the knee to look at all the tissue in there and see what's up. But, hard to say from such a distance . . . . I hear you about not wanting to see docs . I'm sick to death of them myself. Vanyel

I have hip osteoarthritis, and I think some kind of radiating pain into my knee. I have pain in the front of both my knees, and I don't know if its arthritis or I just weigh too much. I don't have health insurance right now, so I can't see the doctor. I had to drop it last year because the premiums went up to over $550/mo. I take naprosen every 3 days because I dont want to over use it. My question is about radiating pain? Is this possible?

Radiating pain is very possible. Pain from the hips can often radiate down the legs to the knees. Pain coming from the back can also radiate into the hips and legs. Pain is a funny creature and we all feel it differently. As for arthritis, we all develop some arthritis as we age - normal wear and tear on the joints. If you are overweight, that can hasten the development of arthritis in the weight bearing joints. Losing weight can help alot if you're able. Naprosyn is a good anti-inflammatory and you should not be overly afraid of taking it more often than once every 3 days unless you have a heart problem or a history of bleeding in the stomach. If you are using it over the counter, just follow the bottle instructions - their recommended doses are very safe. Watch for stomach problems. It is a good drug for arthritis.

Vanyl
Thank you for the advice. I read that naproxen could cause liver damage, so that is why I limit its use. But perhaps I will use it little more often, and I gained a few pounds back at Christmas, and I think this is contributing to the increase in pain.

Hi guys and gals! Been a long time but wanted to ck in with you all!
I fell in January of this yr. Fell on concrete and damaged both knees no health insurance. did the ice packs at first and all. Then later heat. My doctor had previously told me to lose weight and walk daily 30 minutes briskly. Because of the injuries I just now am able to do that part of it. I had to gradually slowly increase the activity of the knee. building it up to before. Since a year ago. I have been trying hard to lose periodacially. Each injury slows it down some. I take Naproxan ...prescription strength and I only take it one a day now. Was two a day due to the injury to the knees. It helps me soooo much and the regular exercise just about eliminates all my pain and discomfort. Inflammation seems to be the most common reason I need to do both. WE...hubby and me started drinking elations for healthier joints...one bottle a day...in pharmacy section of WalMart for each of us. We started this about 6 months ago. We both feel a definite difference when we run out and the stores are sold out. Then I have to go back to 2 Alleve a day prescription strength. One other thing that I swear by....a good body pillow when sleeping. If you need help for the knee....then under the knee. If you need for the hips then on your side between the knnes and ankles and arms all parallel with each other wuth the pillow between them, and wake up with almost no achiness in the hips. One last thing we need water to more or less oil or joints. Drink enough to see improvement. I try to a glass full every few hours all day long. Hope something I shared helps you. Love Rhea Oh by the way my doctor wants me to quit the alleve because they AMA have been cramming it down her throat that it can do damages to the liver and kidneys. So I am hoping to quit them by end of summer....by then I hope to be at my goal weight of 1701bs. Right now I am at 215. In the last few months I have lost about 35 lbs. each lb off helps me have less pain.

Heyy Hoppet,
My advice is, better safe than sorry You probably should start with physical therapy and floor work before taking on any regular exercise routine on foot You are right pain is a sign there is something wrong - don't push it - take it slow and asy - there are plenty of things you cqn o do work your knee on your back or bottom :) in my humble opinion - I'd start there
