Discussion:
Pad and high platelet count

I was diagnosed in 1997 with pad. I had vascular ulcers on both legs. A bi-fem artery replacement done. In 2005 I started having the same problems. Vascular ulcers on both legs. This time a bypass was done on my left leg from the groin to the ankle and a partial bypass done on the right leg. Two surgeries for the replacements & two surgeries for depreeding the leg ulcers, which became infected with mersa.
During that time I had a high blood platlet cout of in the millions. Thought to be caused by the infections.
My plates have decreased but still are in the 600 thousand range high compared to most normal people. I'm seeing another vascular surgeon again and a hematologist in the near future.
So for anyone with this type of disorder I understand.

" Hey Bruce, I've been looking around for a PAD group. I'm pretty sure I'm somewhere in the beginning phase as I'm sure it's went unnoticed or undiagnosable for awhile.
I read where you were dx'ed back in '97, but I'm wondering if you can recall what some symptoms were beforehand. Particularly if any of these sound familiar:
Waking up with a completely lifeless, rubbery arm ( circulation did return after shaking it awhile ).
Balance problems
Mild pain near my elbow joint.
Thin Y veins appearing around my inner elbows.
Prominent Veins in my forearms.
Occasional hand numbness ( sometimes while sleeping ).
I also have Mild COPD, so I'm not sure what role that might play. But, this Summer is not a lot of fun. "

" Oh yeah, I was also wondering if you know of any other good support groups. I'm really needing to associate, if you understand. I'm still struggling with smoking, but just re-started Chantix. So, hopefully...
Anyways, support groups are great imo because you can learn so much from others. Maybe someday I will be able to help others. "

" Not sure if all your symptoms are pad related. I too have elbow joint pain, have had numbness in my left arm occasionally. I definately would see a Dr. I still have some ofthose same symptoms, but the numbness has stopped. Smoking is one of the top causes for pad, as in my case. And was basicly told quit smoking or lose my legs. I quit using Chantix and recommend it to anyone. Don't put off seeing a Dr. "

" I go to the VA Hospital, so they gave me smoking sensations classes along with the chantix. The smoking support group here can also be of help. "
