palpitations post ablation

hi everyone- im in some dire need of connection to anyone who has experienced somewhat of what i have lately. to make a long, LONG, story short, i started to have cardiac issues 2 yrs ago, after many dr.'s telling me its anxiety or that i was doing drugs (being that im 21-obviously i cant have a real heart problem), after seeing so many dif. dr.'s and having so many diff. types of tests...you all know how it goes, i dont need to explain...i finally had a radio frequency catheter cardiac ablation on aug 8th and then on the 13th was dx'ed w/ a PE in my left lung. just this friday i noticed i was having these palpitation, lots of skipped beats and then feeling my heart double up to make up for the one it just missed. it takes my breath away. the pauses im feeling have gotten longer, ive become more symptomatic (besides the emotional exhaustion of so many hospital visits and drs and drugs and surgeries) and the drs dont seem worried. they said eventually all the pac's and pvc's that im throwing (which have been documented on a monitor) wont be good for the heart...but when is eventually? do i worry? i know i have to be persistent with drs, etc...im my own best health care provider in terms of getting done what needs to get done, but im just so angry and fed up with everything, and now, worried. any advice? anyone ever feel this? or feel this after an ablation? im up at school, away from my reg docs and my family (not too far) and im 21...i need support so whatever ya got, ill take it. THANKS!

" HI,
I have never had an alblation, But I have had my share of arrythmias. I am not a doctor, It sounds like you are having atrial flutter. I have lived with this for years ( It stinks ). Do you take an anti-arrythmic ? Some anti-arrythmics can cause arrythmias.
It took me several years to find a anti-arrythmic med that works for me. You need to stay on your doctor, I have spoken with others that had to have a secound albation. Make sure you cut out all caffine pop, chocolate.
The good news is that as bothering as atrial arrythmias can be they are on the most part not life threatning. They can make you feel pretty bad. Did you have a atrial or ventricular alblation ?
My doctors told me ten years ago to learn to live with it, So I do. You can talk to your doctor about an implantable defibrillator. I have had mine for over sixteen years.
Arrythmias can be very scarey and make you anxtious. I was DX over twenty years ago. I know exactly how you feel, E-mail me anytime if you need help with anything. "

" thanks for responding, its good to know people are listening...all the support i can get right now, the better. thats exactly what it feels like to me, a flutter. its been 5 days now since the palpitations started. once i was out of the hosp. from the PE, my heart was great...rate and rhythm wise. right now the meds im on are just coumadin and aspirin. my blood levels just dropped so theyre changing my doses two days a wk. i dont tolerate beta blockers well, especially that i have asthma. they had me on lopressor but i slept like a rock for hours on that, plus it exacerbated my asthma. the docs kept me on it anyway because the "benefits outweighed the risks." i dont have high bp, but they used it to reduce my high hr, which worked enough but no longer do i have hr's in the 170's...im lowest 70 and lately highest 98. the last ekg i had yesterday showed normal sinus rhythm with short pr intervals. the monitor has to be on to see all the pac's AND pvc's. im very symptomatic; tired, sob, some cp. the pauses seem longer and the palps seem more frequent. i had an atrial ablation. so, thats the story, any ideas or other advice by anyone would be so greatly appreciated. support is just as good, if not better. thank you glenn! " Hi
Have you tried hooking your fingers together and pulling ? I find hitting myself around the breast bone works the best for me. ( NOT TO HARD ) It may sound stupid but it does work sometimes. I have spoken with others who have HCM and arrythmia problems that do this also. Good luck hope you find something soon that helps. "

" Hi Kate,
I have had the palps for several years now..doctors always dismissed it until I had the big L Vent Tach event (280 beats/min)..I had the ablation procedure..worked well but still palps once in awhile..ended up with A-Fib ICU stay last month..they upped my Cardizem..too bad you cannot take the beta-blockers..I think that is helping me considerably. Still experience palps..usually around cycle..think alot o f it is hormonal..having uterine ablasion next month..hope that takes away some of the discomfort associated with periods. The docs told me when I feel the running beats and then skipped (A-fib), I should bear down like I'm going #2 (sounds sick-I know), but thats what they said. With V-Tach, it's a hard blow to the middle of the chest...think I would just go in to ER instead. I wish you the best of luck..hopefully you will get in to see a Dr. when your heart is actually doing the irregular rythym and have the EKG going. :)

" Why did you have two of them? Did the doc say that the second one was successful? I had two EPS and Ablations for WPW both were unsuccessful and immediately after both of them I had more PAC/PVC's . They put me on Propafenone(rythmol) and Metoprolol(Toprol XL) and it has helped but I still have symptoms like you described. I also have asthma but am on a low dose of the beta-blocker. Can you try taking the kind I am on a low dose? Because its a Cardiac-Selective drug. Meaning it only targets heart receptor sites not the ones that deal with breathing. I hope that your condition gets better. "

" Hi BriS, sorry it took me so long to respond. it does seem that the ablation worked, its just these lasting palpitations. most of them have gone away, not anything like it was last wk. now just a few a day, and not too severe. i wonder if my palps will start back up again during my cycle...this will also be my first w/o birth control and im a bit nervous, actually, A LOT nervous. i cant tolerate beta blockers, but the docs did say to try magnesium oxide, so if they come back hard, thats what ill go on. the bearing down, thats called the val salva maneuver, just in case you wanted to know. thanks for talking! : ) "

" colo88, i didnt have two ablations, i had one, and it seems to have worked. what happened was i was in ICU a wk before my ablation cause of my severe symptoms, then after the ablation, i wound up with a huge pulmonary embolism. no one knows yet if it was due to a blood disorder (cant get that checked til off coumadin, so im told), or if it was from birth control, or the surgery, or all 3. ive tried toprol before, didnt really work well with me. maybe rhythmol will, ill bring that up if need be. thank you for the advice, hope all is well with you. " Kate,
So sorry to hear of your hospitalization..I can relate to your frustration..feeling alone and that nobody else in this whole world understands...believe me..I've been there. I don't even tell my husband or anyone for that matter when I am having palps or dizziness. I just take my Klonipin and it somewhat subsides. I see my Doctor today for Rotator Cuff Tear..oh and by the way, did I tell you I have Multiple Sclerosis too! Fun Fun! Not to make light of your problems..yours are very serious and glad you are getting the care you need. I too have serious misgivings about birth control pills..every time I take mine, minutes later, I have palps. Going in to check on Uterine ablasion end of the month.

Good Luck to you...you're so young to have to deal with such things..I have a 17 yo..worried she might get MS, but we have to live each day as it comes and make the best of it and be positive.
Hugs! BriS. "

" I had an ablation 2 1/2 years ago for SVT but did not work. I was on lopressor but ended up in the hospital for asthma. They should not have kept you on it. I also have PVC's and PAC's and my dr said that everyone has them. The proble arises when you are having many together or they are very frequent. I feel when I have them and it can be scary. I now have Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia and had a pacemaker placed because on cardizem and verapamil I dropped to the 30's. I am now on 300 of Cardizem and am 120 to 140 so they keep adjusting my dose. They don't want to do another ablation because the one they would now have to do is on the outside of my heart and they could damage a nerve that could damage my lung and with my asthma they don't want to take that risk. Right now I am so tired because my rate is too fast. I also know how you feel when drs just tell you it's anxiety or that you are too youg. I was told that by the 1'st dr but I found someone who really believed me and did something about it. I am here if you need me. "

" Hello,
Sorry you are having problems. I had an ablation this past March. My A-Fib had become A-Flutter, so they decided to do the Ablation to correct the short circuit.
I did well during and after surgery, not problems at all.
Two weeks ago, I began having A-fib events, used a monitor, and right on que, my A-Fib has started up again.
I am now on an increased dosage of Rythmol and they have started me on Coumadin.
Please check with your doctor.
Take care
